The NHL would never do that. This isn't a circus, unlike European hockey with their golden helmets and cheerleaders (and I'm not taking about ice girls). They celebrate individualism overseas and will stick an ad anywhere. It's sickening.

:shakehead This is one of the most stupid posts I've ever read on this forum.

I prefer European and Japanese cars over American cars. Yep, I'm definitely a xenophobe. I don't like European hockey. Sorry to hurt your feelings. Maybe some of you shouldn't be so damn sensitive.

I'm sure you would have been completely fine with a European using inductive reasoning to make inflammatory assessments on Americans based off of a very minor experience.

You didn't say you hated their hockey. You attacked a culture of people. Come on, you know the difference.

I didn't attack a culture. I was talking about hockey the entire time. I don't like the hockey played there. That's all there is to it. Where did I attack Europeans? Man are people so damn sensitive.

Your words. You either didn't mean hockey exclusively or you need to be more specific with your inflammatory remarks.

I went into further detail about celebrating "individualism" in this same thread. And I'm well aware that is a problem in every sport, in particular the NBA and NFL where it's all about "me." Just look at LeBron's championship speech as a perfect example of that.

Either way, I have a lot of issues with European hockey. Look at how the best young European talent come overseas at an early age. The development system is slowly dwindling there because for ages they have been giving preference to these older players with no future. They are given preference because they aren't likely to leave their country, whereas a young prospect with a promising future will be stunted and either comes over with stunted development. Then you have the KHL which is so damn corrupt.

I don't care what these European posters think. Plenty of my favorite players have been European, I just do not like the leagues there. I think they are inferior in every imaginable way possible in terms of developing talent. Look at how certain nations have just run dry of any talent. And it isn't due to the NHL milking them of their talent.

Japanese cars? Stop right there buddy. They are made of paper . most Japanese cars are the least safe. European is the way to go, and American is good too. I love my stang.

Let's for example say there was a post about about concession stand pricing and how fans in Madison Square Garden had to pay 10 bucks for a hot dog. And to that my response was something like how fans in Europe would never get that ripped off, Americans play dumb dump and chase hockey from the stone age, they have to break for commercial every five minutes and to compensate they have women in skimpy outfits skate out on the ice, then i top it all off by saying "they cheer fighting like it's the Roman times and the only thing they ever care about is money. It's sickening."

Notice how very loosely it is related to the prices of hot dogs and it's just me seeing an opening to rant about everything I don't like about American hockey (I don't actually share these opinions). You don't think that'd be inappropriate?

I hope NHL keeps the jerseys "sacred" in the future too. The way how sport jerseys are usually free from ads is kind of ironic though considering how commercialized everything else around the sport(s) in US is. Nascar & auto racing excluded, but motorsport has always been very different in this sense.

It's not just the ice in Europe, but I've always hated how the jerseys are full of ads. Especially the team's jerseys that plays on this arena in the pic (google "oulun karpat"). Firstly because they look ugly, but also because logo gets buried in the ads, hiding team identity and making retro jersey designs impossible. And worst, not all players even have the same ads. What makes so ugly is that typically the ads are just literally stamped on the jerseys without even trying to make them blend better with the jersey design (if there is any design left in the first place).

Worst are the jerseys used in the Euro Hockey Tour... national alternative/B jerseys full of ugly ads. And what about an Austrian team (re)named after a the owner-sponsor?

Just for you Ron.

And I meant on TV they're terrible. I believe MSG did it first.

Totally agree. They are very distracting. I actually vow never to purchase from the offending advertiser. I can't stand ads that are intrusive.

I come from a time that there was no advertising anywhere. It's been so long I can't even remember how long the ads have been on the ice and on the boards. I guess I have gotten used to those ads but Jesus I hated them when they first appeared.

Thanks for the re-post of the avatar. I don't know where you get these, but one day I am going to hunt down your source!

True, and I bet it would be very difficult for players to track the puck as well and play on. Brutal.
Actually probably not that hard to see it... there is no proper ice surface yet. Add it and the colors won't pop out quite that much. Compare to this:

that is a total clusterF

1- i would hate to play on that. tracking the puck would be a total pita. i can't imagine being a goalie and trying to pick up a puck at the point, through a screen, that is being shot off a dark colored ice ad.

2- "non" hockey and casual fans have enough problems following the play. laying all that crap on the ice would make even more difficult for them to tell where the puck is. the rookie fan follows the puck around, the same way they follow the football, baseball, etc in other sports. as the NHL tries to attract new fans this would be a major impediment

3- if the NHL did adopt this crap, then it may signal a return of the 'Fox' puck. i can't see the league returning to that nonsense.

4- it just looks like ****. the same way that Euro jerseys look like **** with all the ads.

Breaking contracts, throwing tantrums here in order to earn bigger dollars at home where they are revered to as heroes form escaping from the oppressive clutches of the NHL is what I'm getting at, coupled with the stupid things they do like the Golden Helmet award for the leading scorer of the league. It's like asking for a target. Imagine seeing any pro league here doing something ridiculous like that.

Not a pro league but close enough, WAY more popular than the NHL...

It'd just be ridiculous... :sarcasm:

i'd certainly stop watching if the rinks looked like that. Im already sick and tired of advertising, new **** being shoved in my face on a daily basis. Its really one of the main reasons i watch little to no TV anymore, if i watch something its on Netflix...no commercials and no advertising on their website. I could probably swallow some advertising, maybe a patch on the jerseys and some paint on the the ice but it would have to be very subtle. In any case, yea i'd walk away from hockey if it came to that.

It's not a matter of IF so much as a matter of when. In this day and age of owners chasing the all mighty dollar I think eventually it will come to this even in the NHL. I'm right there with you as far as advertising goes and hate the way that it's presented and handled today. I haven't had cable or satellite in close to 10 years now and don't miss it one bit.
That said the NHL will get to this point eventually, they already lost the fight of putting ads on the boards (which was never around when I was a wee youngster) and some minor league teams have already given up small portions of the ice. The days of owners losing money on a team and being fine with it since it's their "hobby" business are gone and ad placement is sadly one of the easiest ways to make money.
I don't think the NHL will go all out right away, but they'll eventually cave and we'll see small ads allowed on the ice or jersey and it will grow from there. It's something like ads on the boards that we'll either have to grow to ignore or else quit watching.

Just to close out this tangent of a discussion about style of play overseas and to clarify why some comments were allowed and why some have been removed.... some explanations:

The NHL would never do that. This isn't a circus, unlike European hockey with their golden helmets and cheerleaders (and I'm not taking about ice girls). They celebrate individualism overseas and will stick an ad anywhere. It's sickening.

This post is OK as Ziggy is referring to European hockey players style of play, not Europeans in general (which would not be allowed).

What's sickening is you taking this opportunity to post xenophobic rants about European hockey.

xenophobia |ˌzēnəˈfōbēə, ˌzenə-|
intense or irrational dislike or fear of people from other countries.

Xenophobia was a poor choice of words there, because again, this was a style of play discussion, not a rant on Europeans. It's a fine line here and I'd rather we not go down this path at all, but again - so long as the discussion is focused on style of play, it's OK.

Sorry the truth hurts but I tell it like it is. That's why so many of these prima donnas end up returning to Europe, they can't cut it here because their stupid little tricks and antics don't fly around here.

This is borderline, but given I can relate the "prima donna" comment back to the individualistic style of play comment earlier, it's OK. Barely. Another moderator may choose just to delete this post because it is so borderline.

Maybe I misunderstand something here, but unless I miss your point, I have a hard time believing that any country in Europe is more "indvidualistic" than the US.

You misunderstood. Again, Ziggy is referring to style of play, not a nationality of people.

I'm sure you would have been completely fine with a European using inductive reasoning to make inflammatory assessments on Americans based off of a very minor experience.

You didn't say you hated their hockey. You attacked a culture of people. Come on, you know the difference.

Ziggy did not attack a culture of people. You inferred that from his comments and that was an incorrect inference (at least from the moderator lens I have to view it through).

I didn't attack a culture. I was talking about hockey the entire time. I don't like the hockey played there. That's all there is to it. Where did I attack Europeans? Man are people so damn sensitive.

That pretty much sums it up. If people are talking about a style of hockey, it's fine. The moment it becomes a discussion about a class or nationality of people, it's not fine. Posts that went down that path were removed. Everything else that is OK by the rules here has remained even though most of it is off-topic. Please get back to the thread topic from here on out.

I wanted to reply in this way because it was obviously a sensitive subject and I wanted to offer a glimpse into what we have to deal with when it comes to moderating. We DO care and do take the time to try to get our moderating right around here. Sometimes it's borderline and is not easy. Thanks for everyone's understanding.

Moving along :)
