GDT: PLAYOFFS: The Canes are Able

The Markstrom phenomenon is why I’ve been perpetually skeptical of anyone who says we need to “fix” the goaltending.

He’s… fine. His year was as good as Freddie’s. He’s a guy a lot of folks here would’ve qualified as “fixing the goaltending.”

Any goalie can collapse in the playoffs. I’m not saying bring Freddie back (nor am I saying don’t bring Freddie back), but whatever we do to “fix” the goaltending should be low impact to our asset base and cap situation. Goalies are just too much of a wildcard to go all in on one guy.

The way that the Canes will probably use their cap space is 2C and either Marner, Ehlers/Boeser, or a 1RD. I think that 1RD will likely go to Morrow, but if no scoring upgrades are available for a fair price, maybe they'll go for a top RD instead. There are many ways that they can use their cap load.

yeah I've been saying this for years. Binnington is a great example too of the opposite, dude has had like 3 insane playoff runs now, 1 ending in a cup, and yet he's a pretty damn bad/inconsistent regular season goalie for the most part and someone nobody would claim is a "fix."

There are a small handful of truly elite top tier consistent goalies like Vasi, Igor, Sorokin, Helle, and that's pretty much it. Even Bob has definitely not lived up to that contract despite the cup runs, that team is just loaded all around.

Even among those four, Helle has a pretty noted history of post season flameouts even if he's been THE reason they got there more than once
