I think you're overwhelmed by recency bias. There's still a risk we'll be short on ammo to acquire missing pieces, especially when trying to add the final ones tp be a contender, by climbing too quickly like Detroit did.

You're also dismissing Hughes's plan. He's repeated he wants to build long term sustainability. For that to happen, we'll always need picks and prospects.

We absolutely need to draft our own pick.
I disagree on the need to draft our own pick, all options are open in my book, if the right player is available it might be good to pull the trigger.

Top talent isn't a need anymore, we have it on the team and in the pipeline. It's not a need for us to draft high anymore, we've done it and we have our franchise players. Of course we do need to keep drafting and keep a pipeline going.

I'm kinda hoping we re-sign Evans. No problem getting assets for the others.
Evans should be seeking to cash in as an UFA and the Habs are not in a position to give a ton of cash to a bottom6er when we have the first dibs opportunity to retain Laine and also acquire other big ticket talents. It’s just not cap effective to give Evans a big contract when we have Beck and Kapanen in the pipeline + can pick up a vet C on the trade market for cheap-ish.

I say no to trades. I don't really care if we lose our pending free agents for nothing this summer. Right now, these guys are playing for each other and losing a teammate (Evans, Armia, Savard) would disrupt whatever they have going right now.

Just play it out.
If this core cannot tolerate turnover due to their inexperience, all the better we see it happen this year where the team isn’t really in gear for a playoff run. The experience will have them grow and hopefully be more professional.

We have 3-4 veteran players leaving this summer regardless. Next year’s roster might have up to 7 new faces, that’s a third of a roster. Demidov, Dvorak-replacement, Evans-replacement, Armia-replacement, Savard-replacement, Pezzetta-replacement, Struble-upgrade, and who knows what else.

I don’t want to destroy their morale, of course, but every season is different and picking up a ton of assets for the pending UFAs will allow the Habs to make serious money moves to upgrade 2C and 1RHD in due course.

Damn, Bruins win in OT. Bennett highsticks McAvoy, so Bruins got almost a full 2 minutes PP.

Pastrnak attempts to make a cross seam pass to Lindholm instead Reinhart intercept it. It goes off his blade, hits the inside of the post blocker side & goes in.

Boston can't lose their spot today.

To get in now:

Montreal needs to win
CBJ & Pens just need to lose

If the Bruins continue to play like that they won't win very many games. They got outplayed big time.

We CAN and we WILL!
One game at a time. I haven't seen a Habs team clicking like this since I can remember. This is better than the Subban Price days, better than the Kovalev days. Best since the 93 Cup. And it's about to get to another level with Demidov as a second franchise player.

Franchise players:

Lane Hutson
Ivan Demidov

Star Players:

Nick Suzuki
Cole Caufield
Patrick Laine
Juraj Slafkovsky
Kaiden Guhle
Jacob Dobes
Jacob Fowler
Samuel Montembeault
Kirby Dach (maybe)
David Reinbacher (maybe)

DET up 4-0 in the 1st on SEA.

With a win, DET will pass MTL. They will tie us at 44 pts in 42 GP. But they have more RWs. They currently have 15 RWs while MTL has 14. And if DET holds on and beats SEA in regulation, they'll have 16.

DET really turned it on since the coaching change. They're on route to win a 7th game in a row.

This is why in some of my desired results, I'm looking for teams behind MTL to lose. Because while we want them to pass the teams ahead, they need the teams behind them to lose. Because this is what happens when they win. They catch up and can pass MTL.

Do we want Pittsburgh or Tbay to win? For me I want Pittsburgh because all of a sudden, TBay becomes within reach. Would make it 3 spots up to grab.

Yesterday we fought our ass off and lost. Conversely, the Bruins were as undeserving as I’ve ever seen a winner. It was a shooting gallery. Something like 100 shot attempts by Florida while Bobroski at some point had let in 3 goals on 11 shots.

Looks like Detroit is the real deal. This isn't new coach bounce anymore.
2021-2022 Habs won 5 in a rows after MSL joined as coach, it didn't turn them into the "real deal".

Boston went 11-4-1 in their first 16 games after their coach change. They are 2-6-1 since and reverting to .500 if not lower.

And it's not like Detroit wasn't beating bad teams before the coach change.

Honestly, with so much time left, I really don't care one way or another. The Habs are playing sustainable hockey. I like our chances.

This is the craziest race in the east in recent years.

I look at 5-6 years back, on January 12th, there's usually 4 to 5 teams completely out of the PO race.
This year, there's only one.

Philadelphie could go on a streak like the Habs and Detroit did and get into the mix.

Yeah the race in the East is crazy this year. The fall of the ranger opened a place for the rebuild team to make it.

The race in the West is kinda weak. Only Calgary and Vancouver fighting for a playoff spot. Hopefully, Vancouver make it and Calgary lose it for a better draft pick for us.

The time period can vary.

One example is when Montreal started 0-5 in 1995 and cleaned house. They brought in tremblay and he went on an immediate heater for several weeks which they rode to a playoff berth.

Worst case scenario would be the standing ends up as it is now. Picking 14th and 18th, no playoff. At least our players will have show progress.

Of course....we have to pick on a rested Dallas on a back to back.....and now they lose on their back to back to Ottawa. The schedule sucks.

Columbus is leading 2-1
NYi is also leading 2-1

The race look crazy right now, because many teams were at ~.500 not that long ago. But there are teams that have slowed down or haven't taken a step forward from .500.

Last week, teams wanting to grab a WC in the East (~90 pts) had to be a ~.600 team for the rest of the season. If teams haven't taken a step forward already, that .600 is just increasing higher.

The race is really between Ottawa, Columbus, Habs and Detroit.

I’d add Boston to that list, and I wouldn’t count out the New York Rangers just yet.
