Playoff Keefe

Some coaches don’t have the capability to make in-game adjustments - - they need to break down film before they can recognize what the problem is and decide what adjustments need to be made.

Keefe doesn’t seem like a Nick Nurse so much as a blender who tries random things for the sake of it without purpose. The idea that he would keep trying something because it worked earlier in the season is so crazy when there’s another human coach trying to counter act what worked for the Leafs earlier. Is he not aware of the chess match that had to happen to get star players free of matchups, what home ice and last change actually means and why tactical adjustments are required beyond statistical sample size? The more you learn the more you shake your head.

I didn’t want Thornton or Perry in the off-season.... but if you were going to sign one, Perry was the clear choice.

As has been mentioned before, Thornton has never been able to raise his own game. Thinking he could show younger players how to do what he can’t was ridiculous.

I wanted Perry in the offseason because he was part of the Dallas run to the finals where he put up some good production and was a real jerk on the ice. Also we’re reports he was ready to move back to his dream home in London. I’ve always disliked the player as a menace on the ice but thought his abrasive style might make sense to give us more of that pugnacity we were missing. I would imagine his personality probably wouldn’t have meshed with the super friends peace and love atmosphere of the Leafs room. Was joking around that he would be a difficult player to play against but obviously had no idea he would incapacitate our captain and the keep scoring key goals against Toronto. Oh well.

That’s exactly what the Leafs have been missing for the past half decade.

They desperately needed - - and STILL need - - two or three disruptive agitators like Perry who make things miserable in the playoffs.

I think they also need a guy with a stake in the franchise who will make life miserable for his teammates too when they're under performing. At some point it's not about learning or loving the boys. You need someone to drag them up forcefully.

Bring a real NHL coach that would make Matthews cry. And if Marner isn’t traded this coach better make him cry too. These guys have to know they’re not at a homecoming shindig. It’s get results or get in shit or get traded.

keefe is a cuck for big $ players. Letting 90lbs Marner walk all over him.

paul Marner needs a coach like Torts to tell him to shit the f*** up and to have grown balls to raise his son not to be a bitch.

And when they had a coach who was tough on Matthews the media and the fans freaked out in case it made him want to leave.

Babcock sucks because he won't play Matthews and Marner together!

I am too ticked off still to go over every interview.

If someone had the patience to go over every interview; did someone ask Keefe why in the blue hell he kept Matthews-Marner together even when that line was struggling to generate any offense? And if he got asked that what did he say?

Keefe said after losing Tavares, he wanted to keep Matthews-Marner together because there's established familiarity, chemistry and stability there, and he didn't want to disrupt that...I'm paraphrasing, but that's essentially his response. But he certainly should have known that Matthews has a strong history with Willy under Babcock, and that Marner also had played lower in the line-up before with great effectiveness. He should have moved Willy up to play with Matty because there would have been 2 shooting threats on that line. I don't think the Habs would have been able to smother both Matthews and Nylander on the same line.

Literally could have made the difference.

Still bothers me. What did he have to lose??

Oh right, the series.

And that’s why Joel Quennville is the best coach. Some games Toews & Kane together, some games split. Keep it fresh and keep opponents off balance

If they dominate together keep them together, if they don't split them up. What's so hard there to think about? You make changes to win, whatever coach it is. People sub f***ing Ronaldo and Messi if they are struggling in a match, what are these losers compared to them?

Ronaldo and Messi play Soccer ,the lamest sport ever. Almost hate it more then the Leafs loss. But your point is point on. How hard can it be , if it dont work, do something to change momentum. Anything!

It's kind of as if there's a middle ground in there to keep other teams guessing and be honest. :dunno:

Your post is as myopic as the two coaches.

He missed playoff Marner was having a mental breakdown.

One legged Hyman + Playoff Marner + Matthews = ineffective.

The Throughline there is asking for a coach who adapts a game plan in the face of elimination.

Well this is just silly. It clearly worked for a long time. Until it didnt. But Keefe, like Babcock, is stubborn. Refused to make changes. All we saw once in a while these playoffs was swapping out Hynan for Nylander. Matthew's and Marner never got split up. There's a happy medium here. It doesnt need to be one or the other.

He wasn't
I don't think policing the ice for the kids was ever an issue though. I think the Canadiens just defended the middle and dared the Leafs to either do their damage from distance or enter the trenches and get dirty. The Leafs best players weren't willing to craw into the gutter. If Simmonds ran around like an animal, the Habs would have made us pay on the powerplay. Montreal was the worst possible match-up for players like Simmonds, Bogosian and Foligno.

Maybe Getz and Perry will come to TO this off season.

Messi was once viewed at someone who only show up for Barca-the team who pay him and not Argentina-pretty much volunteer work, lol.
Football players had it so much worse than Hockey players and yet some here think fans is the problem the Leafs didn’t advance.

I agree in general for facing actually good teams, but we should not need aggressive line matching to hide Matthews/Marner from a Danault-Weber-Chiarot shutdown unit. They should have been able to score against whatever Montreal could throw at them, we're not talking about hiding them from the Pahlson line with Niedermayer-Pronger backing them up.

I think they need a leader who is give a damn and is willing to pull anyone aside and tell them straight. I think it was Donaldson who said something like this is the get it done league. Leafs need someone like that and others need to follow.
