Small sample size, but so far this guy is easily the worst playoff coach I've ever seen for the Leafs.

He adjusts to nothing, fixes nothing. His team has got and held a lead only once in 6 games and if it wasn't for one of the most miraculous comebacks in history their record would be 1-5.

His presence actively hurt the team tonight by overusing Jumbo, something that was called out way before it actually cost us the GWG.

Keefe is fine, defence is fine, goaltending is fine.

Pp and Forwards need to get their hands outta their ass or make a damn trade.

Disagree, exact same problems last summer, was his job to address the PP two months ago and he still put out Thornton and went -1.

No time for a trade now.

just have to hope that #34 and #16 show up.

This game, they didn’t.

as for Keefe... coaching isn’t a big deal. He can only the run the lines he has and hope the players outwork the opponents.

this game, they didn’t.

He literally changed the PP and the two guys he added combined to give up the GWG.

I mean obviously it's on the guys on the ice but that seems like something you could pin on the coach no?

Dave - I don’t chalk wins up to coaching prowess so I cannot chalk losses up to them either.

have to be consistent.

if your general sentiment is that Keefe is nothing special.... one of 19 different coaches and consultants on this team with a PR function... and all of them failed collectively tonight... I’m totally with you on that.

plus #34 needs to execute.

Nylander looked by and large the most threatening of the core players we had playing tonight. TOI 16:40, of which 4:01 was in the final stretch. Had the game progressed without the Byron beauty, Willy would be on pace for 13 minutes in regulation time. W T F.

Marner played 27:23 while Matthews' last shift was 4:03. Just a thought, but maybe the offense would look better if 2/3 of the talents weren't running on fumes when the team needed them to score?

Spezza's being done dirty by Keefe too - 12 minutes tonight when everyone and their mother can tell the first unit PP is trash. Had an entire back half of a season to try things, but failed to implement any change for a period greater than a game or two.

One change was forced onto Keefe due to injury while the other was due to the QB not performing. By the way, he went back to Rielly when the team needed that much needed goal in the final minutes.

Fair enough.

And my general sentament is he's the worst I've seen coach in the playoffs. Relative to Burns, Quinn, Carlyle, Babcock. Keefe has gotten the least out of his roster against the worst competition.

Honestly, I think he gets a pass for now unless he fails to make any adjustments and we see Joe Thornton anywhere but the press box for game two.

Some questionable decisions for sure. A good coach learns from them. If we don't see any adjustments, Thornton is on PP1 again, etc. I'll be worried.

The blind love for veterans needs to stop immediately. Thornton and Simmonds are utterly useless.

I firmly believe Galchenyuk and Engvall would have had way more of an impact.
I'd also add Spezza to that latter mix of players - he's been on. Easy way to rectify lineup deficiencies is to play 11F-7D which is something I've been clamouring for for the better part of this season. Guys like Nash, Simmonds, and Thornton can play and bring their own element to to team, sure, but
Simmonds outright sucks, a passenger for all intents and purposes. Man doesn't even hit!
Nash needs to be eased in, but he's more of a failsafe whereas Engvall has been on a hotstreak to end the season...
Thornton is streaky and his skating isn't up to snuff, maybe a shooting threat like Galchenyuk can help keep teams honest on the PP but also in 5v5 play.

With Spezza... I think he might have said something to Keefe so that he's played reduced minutes.

Price was .972 tonight, and AM had 8 shots and didn't score, this isn't repeatable. If they get outplayed and lose maybe that is on the coach but.... they didn't get outplayed. It was never going to be a sweep.

It's a repeat of the last playoff series he coached where they were shut out multiple times.

I wanna be wrong though, I think was wrong about Dubas. I hope I'm wrong about Keefe, but his results to this point have been awful.

shots are nice. Goals win games.

matthews is paid to perform. It’s time to execute.

Sandin out .. Dermy in .. and likely we win last night with that 1 move .. love Sandin but we can't have a junior level skater in Jumbo and an AHL level skater in Sandin playing .. 1 way too old/slow .. 1 way to young/slow .. that was a coaching decision which backfired

Looks like Alex Galchenyuk is out of taxi squad grey and in regular white at practice today. Engvall in regular colors as well.

Wow really? Wonder who sits. Unless Nash comes out and Keefe goes with what he's more familiar with. Here's the changes I'd make without our captain:

Galchenyuk-Matthews-Marner
Gally should be fired up after a scratch, and looking to continue playing his best rendition of Hyman that he can. Matty and Mitchy can work with just about anyone on their LW. Hyman only goes down a line because....
Foligno-Nylander-Hyman
Nylander takes over at C. He's capable and has done it for us before. Is it ideal? No. But having Kerfoot up at 2C is less ideal imo. Nylander looked like he was buzzing last game. He gets to work up the middle of the ice, and is padded by two of our best and most physical defensive wingers, that can also finish. Foligno and Hyman will help Willy out with the added responsibilities of playing C
Mikheyev-Kerfoot-Simmonds
This line has played together before, and looked respectable. I'm learning that Simmonds is nowhere near as valuable in fourth line minutes. Everytime he's looked good, he's been in the top 9 with more ice. He'll benefit from two quick skaters on his line.
Thornton-Engvall-Spezza
Spez and Jumbo have looked good together at times...but that was with Brooks. Seems like if Engvall and Galchenyuk are practicing in regular shirts, that nod goes to Engvall due to having more experience, and PK ability.
That said, Engvall provides those two vets with much of the same. Footspeed, and allows Spezza to play the wing.

Nash was as advertised last night. Coming off an injury and playing for a new team, he really did nothing wrong. Low event, not much to see on either side of the puck. But this isn't a team with a McDavid that needs slowed down...we need to come at Montreal in waves. They let us turn it into a track meet in the second period, and that's when we looked our best. We don't need a shutdown line against this group, we need balance imo. Cuz our balance, is better than their balance. Hope for a big time effort come Saturday night. JT will be watching boys!

Playing 7 defensemen would be idiotic. Our top defenders don’t play enough as it is.

So I think it's fair to say a coach opens himself up to multiple critiques if the team doesn't win.

This one though I don't think is particularly fair. He's definitely not afraid to jumble lines and even roster players (especially based on the different expected lineup for game 2)

Yea you're right, not sure why I used that word.

Spezza averaging under 12 minutes per game when he's been the Leafs best P/60 player all season and one of the few playoff producers is inexcusable. That is some real Mike Babcock shit.

With the injuries to JT and Foligno, and other players being extremely ineffective, it just makes no sense not to elevate the guys who are getting it done and let them carry you.
