The Messier Leadership award is the fakest of all trophies in any sport I know of. Why hasn't anyone won it twice? Is leadership a quality that people just lose after a year? The winners are just a list of guys that Messier likes. Let Todd Marchant give out a trophy each year, it would be equally as meaningful.

They should give out a Raffi Torres award for most brutal hit of the season. Torres himself can sit on the panel that decides on the award along with Chris Simon, and a third guy (but I can't think of anyone in particular for that third spot right now).

Calder is a nothing trophy IMO, Sid has the full hardware case as far as I'm concerned.

When there's almost a 2 year age gap between the two. I agree with this.

Nothing wrong with singling out Ovi with the Calder though. Grats to him for being better that year.

I agree it's not important, but it can't be the least valuable while the Lady Byng and Mark Messier pat on the back both exist.

The Byng has no relevance whatsoever and I don't even consider the Messier thing to be a real award. They have no value at all.

The Calder is an interesting trophy because you can only win it once. That's why you see so few qualifying here. I don't get why people are getting bent out of shape over it... it doesn't mean that player X is better because he managed to win the Calder. It's just crazy that only two guys have been able to actually do it. And nobody was able to do it with the Selke which would've been really amazing.

Speaking of the Selke, it's an award that is not only specific to a position, but also for a specific style of play while playing that position, so there's that about it too. You can easily be the best forward in the league without being the best defensive forward in the league. Considering that in practice the Norris generally goes to the best offensive defenseman, that's why I feel like we need an award that goes to the best defensive defenseman. I will be extremely biased and vote that it gets called the Erik Cernak Award.

Oh it's definitely trivia. Lots of superstars have not won the Calder and lots of lesser players have.

I wouldn't be okay with naming the award after Scott Stevens. While he made a lot of hits back in the day that would get him suspended repeatedly in today's NHL, they were either legal or just borderline by the rules of his time. With regards to the hit he laid on Kariya, what I remember about it at the time is that the commentators were merely complaining that it should have been an interference penalty, not a brutal suspension-worthy cheap shot (which it would be if he threw the same hit today).

Yeah I was wrong, the trophy existed when they played and they both didn't get it.

Fair enough. I agree he wasn't doing anything that was considered dirty or illegal at the time, but I can't come up with a better description for a lot of his hits other than "brutal". What about renaming it the Raffi Torres Cheapshot award, and creating a separate Scott Stevens Brutal Legal Hit award for the most brutal hit that isn't worthy of a penalty?

And while we're adding awards, I'd also like to suggest a Mike Ribiero award for the fakest injury.

Does Mark Messier really select the winner each year? If thats true, it kind of is a make believe trophy. Not even saying this to defend ovi or anything. Also if your including the calder, the selke should be included. Not sure who that hurts or helps because neither Ovi or Crosby has one.

Maybe you're being sarcastic and I'm not picking up on it, but clearly it's my opinion. Pretty obvious it's my opinion rather than a statement of fact when I add "that I know of" at the end of the sentence. Yes, the Messier Leadership Award is real and exists. The word fake can have multiple meanings. In this case, I'm using fake as one would use meaningless or worthless.

That's a good point. Maybe we need two awards again -

Mark Stone could have potentially won both… remember during that Ottawa vs. Montreal series when PK Subban slashed him in the wrist and he got a “microfracture” and then Subban got kicked out of the game? Stone sure did come back quickly from that…

I’m mostly kidding. Getting slashed in the wrist is no joke and hurts like hell. I wore gloves with a decently long enough cuff and that was one of the reasons.
