Scott Gomez was a fine player (750 points in 1000 career games) and a fantastic playmaker, but he never hit 20 goals his entire career and then exploded for 33 goals in 05/06 and then never hit 20 again.

And then had a whole friggin website based on his inability to score. Respect for playing through that?

When you think about the few big names NHL players who got a 130+ points season, you don't necessarily think about Dennis Maruk. And it’s not like he had a Lemieux or Gretzky on his line. He had 49 more points than the 2nd best scorer (Ryan Walter!) that year in Washington.

I don’t understand what happened here.

He managed to keep it together somehow for 1 full season but otherwise he was completely off the rails. Went to prison for cocaine trafficking after his career and died young in a car crash.
