I was looking at Morgan Rielly's statistics and he had a pretty massive goal scoring year for a d man in 2018 with 20 in 82.

Before that he had 21 goals in his previous 234 games and since then he has 29 goals in his next 321 games. Basically 1/4 of his career goals come in the span of 1/11th of his career.

Nik Kulemin. He had 30 goals in '10-'11 and then failed to hit ten in any of his last three seasons with TOR. I think he had 15 or 16 in his first year with NYI. He never approached 30 again.

Also, David Clarkson. That guy scored 30 goals and then started off hot the next season before cooling off. He scored a whopping five goals in his first season with Toronto.

Sadly Ben Bishop. Went from being a Vezina caliber goalie in 2018/19 (933 sv% combined 59 games reg season/playoffs) to running into injury problems which ended his career quickly after that. I think what could've been for him if he managed to stay healthy.

pretty crazy to think a rookie who never matched (or even came close) to his goals that season would go on to lead the NHL in goals 2 more times in his career

"fell off a massive cliff" is a bit of an exaggeration and keep in mind that this has a lot to do with the league itself changing a lot after that season.

Not exactly fell off a cliff territory but Zibanejad had 41 goals (and 75 points) in 57 games in 19-20 which was probably also his best season defensively. Even though he’s been near point per game mostly since, he’s only ever eclipsed point per game one other time. 19-20 was far and away his career year and he’s been a bit worse each season since, becoming less of a two-way force (still solid, but not what he was) and collecting more PP assists while becoming a worse goal scoring threat annually. But more specifically, he’s never passed 40 goals in his career, except for hitting 41 in 57. He had 39 in a full 82 once, but 19-20 he was on a 59 goal/108 point pace.

To give credit to Cheechoo, he did follow up with 37 goals in an injury-shortened season the next year and then dealt with hernia issues afterward. He was still a good scorer

I mean Bishop had a .920 the next year too, 18/19 was definitely the peak but he didn't immediately fall off

I remember he got suspended in a preseason game for defending Phil Kessel after a hit or something like that. Because he jumped over the bench to stand up for him. Is it possible that set him off on the wrong foot?

It was obvious to anyone but the most blinded fanboys that that season of Rielly's wasn't going to be repeated. He simply does not have the shot to be a guy who can flirt with 20~ goals in a season multiple times.

Wayne Babych fits that description. In 1980-81 - with the Blues - he had 54 goals, 42 assists and 96 points, in 78 regular season games. He was never close to those figures before or after that season. That was also the only season where he played a full season - the injury bug was not his friend.

Well that’s a rather out of touch thing to say. He was on a 20+ goal pace in the shortened season with 15 in 48 games. So he had two established years and then signed with Toronto. A city that needs a scapegoat to feel normal.

It's not like Huberdeau wasn't a consistent scorer prior to that 115 point season. He had seasons of 92 points, 78 points in 61 games, and 61 points in 55 games, immediately before his career year.

I figured the OP's question was more about a player literally having ONE season that is head and shoulders above any other of his career.
