Player ratings for 2022-2023 Regular Season

Ranked in total time on ice by positional group, grades versus expectation unless the performance was so bad even in the face of expectation that a failing grade was warranted.

C would mean basically "just met expectations," with a tinge of disappointment that they didn't exceed them.

B would mean "met expectations with circumstances that lead you to feel good about meeting them."

A would mean either surpassed expectations or met them in a way that you feel very, very good about the player.

D would mean the player was underwhelming or failed expectations leaving you wildly unsatisfied.

F is for situations so catastrophic that in every grade I gave, the player has actually already been moved since management realized how bad the situation was.

Offense

Zibanejad - A-. Fell a little short of 40 which probably would have earned him a solid A in my book.
Panarin - A. Salvaged this from being a B or C earlier in the year with a very hot end. Has to keep up.
Trocheck - B+. Wasn't expecting #1 center, didn't need #1 center, and didn't get #1 center, but a solid second liner through and through.
Kreider - B-. It wasn't reasonable to expect another 50 or even 40 goal season, but only 36 and 54 pts after a 50 goal season feels like regression to the mean.
Kakko - B-. 40 points is a nice step in the right direction, but this is a second overall pick and the improvements need to keep happening.
Lafreniere - B-. See above.
Goodrow - C-. Maybe it was his relegation to 4th line with the importing of better players but not sure I saw the impact for his near $4m salary and he should be on the chop block this offseason for the minutes he gets.
Vesey - A. Pleasantly surprised with this reclamation project, but at the end of the day he's still a 4th liner.
Chytil - B+. He was on pace at one point to be an A+ but he cooled off substantially. Like the other kids, a step in the right direction and looks like he might be a poor man's Mika someday.
Tarasenko - B. Has shown flashes but only produced like a second line forward, really, not a star. Needs to play like a star in the playoffs.
Blais - F. Worst trade in franchise history. Goes to St. Louis and stops sandbagging. Good riddance.
Gauthier - D. Just wasn't gonna work here, we can barely get our talented kids to produce, this guy is a one trick pony, maybe Ottawa has better luck.
Kane - D. Has run up some points, but looks lost, low energy. Serious buyers remorse giving up a first if this is all we get from this guy.
Kravtsov - F. No need to rehash this situation, all parties failed.
Motte - C+. The hype train is off the tracks with this guy. He's a decent fourth liner. Has chipped in a few nice goals. I like the player ok but I'd much rather younger kids like Cuylle get looks here.
Carpenter - D - Fine for AHL fodder, not sure why he was ever on the active roster over Rydahl, who at least deserved a look.
Brodzinski - C - Fine for an AHL/NHL tweener who gets a game now and then.
Leschyshyn - D - AHLer. Don't want on active roster.
Reaves - F - overpriced for how he plays in today's game. A fighter who barely fought. Can't skate. Nice guy but glad we cleared him out.
Cuylle - incomplete
Hunt - F. Don't bring him back.

Defense

Fox - A-. Almost gave a B+. His advanced stats are amazing, though. But I feel like he's seemed gassed and his production has seemed to suffer too. Is it his size? Overuse? Feels like something needs to change going forward.
Trouba - C-. Would have been a D except he has improved in recent weeks a little. Terribly overrated due to hits and terribly overpaid. He's just an ok second pair defender.
Miller - C. Did not develop as expected this year, but still has bright future (I hope). Needs to take the next step to legt first pair defender next year, or even better, starting this weekend.
Schneider - C. See above. Has his moments. Still young. Still has promise to be a good second pair defender. Needs to get better, fast.
Lindgren - A. His grade exceeding Fox's is reflective of this guy not being the better player but he leaves it all on the ice. What more can you ask for besides giving us a friendly hometown deal next contract?
Harpur - D. Our expectations of this guy not being a trainwreck have led to some warm feelings but he's really not good. Would be better buried in the AHL and only called up as a 7th D in emergencies.
Mikkola - B-. Same as above, we have expectations due to experience that our 6th Ds will be awful and Mikkola is not awful. But he's still just a bottom pairing defender.
Jones - incomplete.
Hajek - F. Can't get a foothold. Waived and sent to Hartford.

Goalies

Shesterkin - B+. Has gotten hot lately but struggled plenty relative to expectations earlier in the season.
Halak - B-. Also has had some hot streaks but had stretches where he was uninspiring. Worth bringing back as long as it's cheap enough to be affordable, but that could be tough.
A franchise that has traded Zubov, Amonte, Weight, Savard, Park, Kovalev I don't think Buch for Blais is close to the worst trade. Miller and McD for bona fide AHL players recently is worse than that.

I think Panarin is a scapegoat, I think he was consistently better than Mika. Mika had his usual stretches of lethargic play where he's fanning on every one timer and looks like he hasn't eaten meat in years. OP said relative to expectations, salary, etc. Chytil played at a 50pt pace with minimal PP time, I think Chytil surpassed expectations maybe more than anyone on the team. And I wouldn't call it Mikas career year, 19/20 was, when he paced for 59 goals & 108pts. Every game I thought Panarin did things that looked skillful, he looked like a good player pretty much every night regardless of turnovers or risky plays. There were a lot of games were Mika looked lethargic. Everyone has biases, I don't hate Mika by any stretch. But many know that I do value flash more than most fans, Panarin is just more my kind of player I guess

Panarin was horrible in November and not very good during the Kravtsov era (which in retrospect he gets a pass on. Kravtsov could drag down McDavid.) Overall he had probably about the bare minimum of what I would deem as an acceptable year for him, considering that he’s the second highest paid player in the league.

You’re horribly biased though.

Zibanejad. A+. Career high in points with 91. First season of the eight year extension. He plays in every situation.

Kreider. B+. 36 goals. Another player who plays in every situation. His 88 goals in the last two regular seasons has him 7th overall in goals.

Zibanejad- (A) Career year. Top 10 center in the league. Not as dominant as his 19-20 season. Only thing keeping him from the A+ to me, simply because I think he has another level that he's shown. It's no surprise that his shooting rate was the highest he's ever had that season as well as his shooting percentage. He's far more effective when he's playing selfish. Selke candidate for sure.

Panarin- (B-) His game improved once we brought in some buddies at the deadline. Still, the majority of the year was poor for his standards. Since coming to the Rangers he's the highest scoring winger in the league. Only Kucherov has a higher points per game for wingers in that time frame. This is the high standard he's set for himself. One of the best, if not THE best wingers on the planet. Despite that, the majority of the season he was being outscored by wingers that had no business outscoring him. At "just" a point per game for large portions of the season he was far below the standard he's set for himself. And obviously it wasn't just production, we saw the poor habits and mindless turnovers carry over from last year to this year. A good end to the season helped him statistically a bit, which still was his worst since joining the team. That being said the way he's looking going into the playoffs leaves you feeling far more comfortable than than how you might've felt earlier in the year or going into the playoffs last season.

Kreider- (B) 36 goals, does what he does. Back to regular Ol' +50 point Kreider. Maybe a good and a bad thing that our kids outscored him 5v5. He did get hurt this season, no?

Trocheck- (B+) As advertised. Brought it in exactly the areas that we needed. One of his lower shooting percentage years. If he was closer to his higher years he'd probably be a +70 point player. That'd put him at an A+

Chytil- (A) The kid almost hit 50 playing +14 minutes a night. Not much of a PP role. Can't ask for much more with the role he plays. Obviously has a number of things to work on but really beginning to round out his game.

Kakko- (B-) Hit the 40 point milestone. Shown flashes of his ability to dominate the ice. The points will come.

Lafrenière- (C) Maybe it's a confidence thing because when he's on the kid line he's been a different player. More of the same as above, he's shown glimpses but portions of the season he was completely invisible and at times looked lost. Still though, just missed the 40 mark.

One thing worth mentioning about these young players though, and it's the same thing I brought up earlier in the season... look at their 5v5 and even strength numbers. They're in pretty decent company. Kakko has the same production as Marchand, Bergeron, Reinhart, Kuznetsov, etc... Chytil has more than that. Lots of production comes on the powerplay. So when we talk about the perception of these kids.. I said it early in the year and the same remains true. If they were on a team where they had a legitimate PP role it's incredibly reasonable to say that they'd be 50-60 point players. The players they're in company with... Zuccarello and DeBrincat, ~30 of their points come on the powerplay. So to say that Chytil, Kakko, or Laf could notch 10 or 15 points on the PP and be +50 point players is incredibly fair. And if they hit that 50 milestone the perception is likely much different.

Vesey- (A) Cant ask for more. The guy is making 750k, PKs, chipped in some offense. Plays hard. Signed a team friendly extension.

Goodrow- (B+) More of the same

Motte- (A) ^

Kane- (C+) How do you really accurately assess him... he's clearly playing injured.

Tarasenko- (B) He's not playing to the level that made him a superstar but he's been fine. Plays a complete game.

Fox- (B+) Looked superb most of the season. Lindgren getting hurt messed with his game a bit I feel

Lindgren- (B+) Don't have to say much for him

Miller- (A) Huge step forward offensively this year. He has real star potential.

Trouba- (B) Trouba is Trouba. The injury was really hampering him in the beginning of the year but he improved as the season developed. He may be overpaid but when he's at his best he's a real asset

Schneider- (B) Only 21, first full season under his belt. It's unfortunate that so far in his career here he's mainly played with guys like Nemeth, Hajek, Harpur, etc... he's going to be a real good player.

Mikkola- (B+) Great addition. Was plenty competent with the extra minutes. Ideal 3rd pairing guy

Harpur- (B-) For a 7th defender I think he did fine. Glad to have him for another 2 years.

Hard for me to give any bad grades to our defenders. We finished 4th best in the league in goals against. Part of that is having an incredible goalie, part of that is from defending pretty damn well.

Igor- (A-) Had some shakey moments this season but still put up a good year
