Speculation: Player Discussion: Danil "Goose" Gushchin

  • HFBoards is well aware that today is election day in the US. We ask respectfully to focus on hockey and not politics.

Should Gushchin be sent down/scratched when Ty Dellandrea gets back from IR?

What other option did the Sharks have. They have clearly decided they won’t waive G Smith or Kostin. All other players are deserving of a spot over him or won’t be waived. They had 14 FWds on 1-way contracts. They had no path to keep him.

I’m also convinced they knew Celebrini was going to only play the first game so they knew that Gushchin would have a spot.
What other option is required? If you're convinced they knew Celebrini was only going to play the first game, why is another option necessary? They already decided that at least for the first game that they were going to run 15 forwards and 6 D. After that, it's dependent on circumstances but teams are pretty notorious for playing IR games to avoid sending someone through waivers or reassigning altogether if they feel like they can keep him.

I was criticized on here for being too negative about the 2020 draft. Turns out I was way too optimistic. I genuinely believed we would get 1 200+ game NHLer (as opposed to the 3-4 most Sharks fans were projecting 1-2 years out) from it but now it seems far more likely there will be none.
So the takeaway is that you are also no authority on projecting prospects. Good to note.

Never claimed to be. I don't even watch most of them play. But the odds are the odds and this is a good reminder not to expect much from players drafted outside the top 10.

I don't think you necessarily have to explicitly claim it. You believe the odds are authority enough without watching any of them play. That's hardly helpful.

If Celebrini was healthy they would have sent Gushchin down after giving him 1 game as a reward for his preseason. Gushchin is absolutely dependent on one of the 14 forwards on 1-way contracts to be injured to be on the Sharks.

I would also say that it may be the end of Gushchin, it may not. This is his first shot in the NHL for more than a game at a time. He did okay, but wasn’t able to capitalize. Maybe next time he will.

I don't think it's the end at all. More injuries will come and he'll get another stint or even two. Hopefully he pulls it together at some point. He definitely looked close to doing so in a number of games.

He lost his confidence. It’s a good learning experience for him to recognize he has to bring it all the time. He has to toughen up physically and mentally.
