I could actually see Pettersson making some sense then, but it would have to come at the same time as a Byram trade for some forward help.

Maybe Pettersson with an extension for Rosen and a pick followed immediately by Byram for a 2nd line center or something like that. Run with Pettersson-Dahlin as your top pair and use Byram to fill the top-6 C (or W) opening.

In their last game, the Sabres played Kulich (12 points in 33 games) and Kozak (1 point in 8 games) in their top-6. Even with Zucker healthy (seems like he was out), it seems like Buffalo only has 5 top-6 forwards between Thompson, Cozens, Tuch, Zucker and Peterka. And in Cozen's case, he's not really performing well as a top-6 guy.

I really struggle to see how Buffalo doesn't need another top-6 winger, or at minimum wouldn't pretty clearly benefit from getting another top-6 winger. It may not be top-4 defensive RD or 2C level importance, but it still pretty clearly looks like a massive hole to me.

IMO what they should do is that Cozens and Byram for Pettersson trade, bring in Rakell for futures and run with a Rakell-Pettersson-Tuch line. That looks like a damn good line to me and it leaves Zucker-Thompson-Peterka as their L2.

I'm not contesting that he isn't. The guy I quoted replied that "Rutger was the one who thought he was NHL ready".

You have Rutger wanting to be on a team that would play him in the NHL, PIT now reportedly wanting "NHL ready prospects", and PIT playing Rutger out of camp before demoting him.

... Kinda supports the theory that they thought he was NHL ready when the traded for him and found out otherwise. Which would go against the statement that "Rutger was the one", implying that Dubas didn't share those thoughts.

Rackell feels a little over the hump for the Sabres. As much as he seems useful this season he will be 32. 34 or 35 when contract expires. As a team trying to ENTER the playoff window he might be bad before we ever really compete.

My assumption is Ostlund or Rosen, and Ryan Johnson on defense (paws off hes mine).

Outsider perspective...Rakell is exactly what Buffalo could use more of.

They have byram, power, samuelsson, and they have ryan johnson who can play bottom pair now in LD

It's not really surprising that they're bottom 8 in spite of all those names... They were good, some of them great, at one time, but that time isn't now.

If you're really going for rock bottom to get an elite/generational talent, you pretty much have to go scorched earth like Chicago did in 2022 if you really want to ensure it.

The Penguins aren't looking to do that. They're looking to do more of a rebuild on the fly rather than a full tear it down to the studs rebuild.

As far as EK and Jarry go....that was Dubas' attempt to give the core a kick at the can. When the Pens did terribly despite those moves Dubas hard pivoted last trade deadline towards the current course which is to add picks and prospects and young nhl ready players where possible. The Pens are no longer interested in veteran players as rentals or for longer term deals unless taking on those players brings the aforementioned assets with them (eg, they took on Hayes because they got a 2nd out of it).

If you want to know what Dubas' plan is, ignore what he did his first year and focus on what he's been doing since he traded Jake Guentzel and there's your answer.

Will it work? Is it smart? I guess time will tell with that. As a Pens fan I'm highly skeptical that Dubas can rebuild enough in time to make it matter for Crosby before he retires. I think the most likely scenario is they build a decent prospect pool/stable of young players but not enough to get them back to relevancy, and then Crosby retires, and then they bottom out anyways.

But you know, if Crosby wants to stay they're kinda stuck with this being as far as they can go with a rebuild anyways. He's not going to be forced out nor should he be. It's easy to say they should tear it down to the studs right now but if Sid doesn't want it then it's not happening anyways. Dubas is probably doing the closest thing to a rebuild that FSG/Sid/etc would allow him to.

I would do your deal. I agree with the other poster that we are overloaded with LHD, but we currently don't have any that are particularly good defensively. I think putting him on the left with Dahlin would help unlock Dahlin's offense because he wouldn't need to be covering for a defensively inept partner all the time.

It doesn't solve our problem of lacking RHD, but it does potentially solve our problem of having no defense oriented D we can throw out there at the end of a game when we are up by 1.
