billybudd posted the video link a few posts above. He says it around 1:20 into the video.

Although I think Dejan is full of it on this one too because he says he didn't write or say it was a good trade but he was pretty much the only person in town defending the trade when it happened. I think Dejan forgets that people can still pull up his articles and interviews later on and expose his inconsistencies.

I must have missed that when watching it.

Guarantee they won't seek compensation for bylsma. Will be the same deal as shero. Hynes they would be stupid not to, it's one thing to waive compensation to take a guy off your payroll who is already fired, it's another to let someone take your farm team coach for nothing.

Yeah, I think the precedent has been set. If they didn't seek compensation for Shero, they won't seek compensation for anyone in the future.

If they didn't collect compensation for Shero, I'm going to guess they won't expect it for Byslma. Maybe for Hynes though.

They wanted to be rid of having to pay him...wonder what the salaries are.

Could also depend on which team wants them.

If they kept all three, 3 3rds...but at a cost.

Yup, now he's tweeting about whether or not Despres will go into the HOF in a Pens or Ducks sweater.

Man's pretty easy to figure out though, which makes this all the more amusing. As I've said several times, most hockey fans in Pittsburgh are of the "casual" variety (no offense to any lurkers who frequent this place) and they agree with him because they're simply followers who can't formulate their own opinions because they don't understand the game.

As a result, he'll tweet some random remark then bathe in the glory of his followers tweeting out "Haha way to go DK." as if it's some form of validation. It's pretty funny.

I know I've shared this before in other iterations of this thread

But I have a co-worker who insists these guys - radio and print/blog - are vastly more knowledgeable than the rest of us. "They've access to the team we don't!"

Access and a journalism degree might make you a better writer, but if you're ignorant to the topic you're writing about, does it matter?

I think Dejan doesn't care that people can pull up his past articles because he is never going to be challenged in an environment where he can be called out and dicredited. You can't do it on twitter, can't do it on these 2 minute tv segments. He knows he can dance around things just well enough to make himself important without looking like a fool in the process. We know he's a fool, but we are the minority.

Yeah he just blocks anyone who disagrees with him. I originally thought he was just making the Despres tweets to get page hits, but when he started blocking people for responding to his BS, I realized he's completely serious and just an egomaniac.

Yeah, I think the precedent has been set. If they didn't seek compensation for Shero, they won't seek compensation for anyone in the future.

The opposite precedent is being set right now with Boston seeking compensation for a fired Chiarelli and SJ for Maclellan.

I think it depends on teams' draft situations as well. Teams that have a slew of 1st's and 2nd's will probably give up one 3rd rounder. ie. It's not gonna stop them from hiring someone that they really want.

BUTTT theres always just the simple fact that some owners would rather pocket the cash and get it off the books.

I don't think compensation for fired personnel should even be a thing. Why should you be entitled to reward for firing your coach?

Yeah it's a weird rule, but one that exists so why not try and take advantage of it?

I think the only compensation should be if a team signs a coach that is under contract and currently employed by the other team. For example, if someone came to Hynes for a head coaching gig, I think we should get compensation for that. I don't see why the Sharks should be allowed to get compensation for a coach they fired.

the pens didn't seek compensation though when chuck fletcher was poached by Minny.

There wasn't compensation for front-office people at the time Fletcher was hired away by Minnesota. Compensation for GMs and coaches was something that was pushed for years by the Red Wings, who were tired of having to hire new assistant coaches and GMs every year. It finally was passed by the NHL in the last year, so I believe this is the first offseason where compensation can be asked for.

Well that's the rule and they are pursuing it. So we can think the rule should be whatever we want, but some teams are trying to take advantage of the rule as it is. I'm not sure why the Pens shouldn't.

Because the coach technically isn't fired. He's still on the penguins payroll. He just isn't coaching right now...

If there's not some language in his contract that states otherwise, he could be told to start scouting AHL games as he's still employed. I'm sure coaches have something in there though...

Why would you want a possibly disgruntled former coach doing anything for you? Especially Bylsma, for that matter. If not outright sabotage, he'd scout AHL games solely looking for the next Craig Adams.

Only thing that I wonder about with comp picks is how much goodwill goes when it comes to trades/moves in the league. Do GM's that have done each other favors continue to? Happens in the business world all the time, scratch my back ill scratch yours. Kind of like the hesitancy to offer sheet people.

Yes. One example of this from Shero's tenure was when Burke traded a 6th round pick to the Pens for then-prospect Chris Peluso. Neither GM had any intention of signing Peluso (who was finishing up his college career at the time), but he was a convenient piece for the purpose. Burke said after the trade that he basically did it because he felt bad about flipping Skoula to the Devils for a late-round pick after acquiring him as part of the Ponikarovsky trade.

On the flip side, Burke wouldn't trade with Lowe for several seasons after Lowe signed Andrew Penner to an offer sheet without telling Burke it was coming ahead of time.

...

Of course, it might just be Burke who returns favors and holds grudges...

I have to say, I wish DK wouldn't favourite every insult @Full_Rossi tweets at him. I think he thinks that it's making fun of how Rossi doesn't like DK and not DK himself.

So we didn't ask for a compensatory pick from the Devils but we did from the Sabres? Why?
