A solid backup, so far, yes. Could be more, I suppose, but not yet.

I see a pretty solid goalie who is playing his FIRST NHL season and who can't handle a regular starter load just yet but who is fine with playing about 3/5 games.

Maybe but I'd take Sekac back in a heart beat at this point.

You're right, as a 3rd line defensive center, he has some remote usefulness. But not at 3.5M, and not if he is always unhappy about being in such a role.

I don't think he was unhappy as a 3rd line center, he did opt to re-sign here.
3.5M is not the end of the world though. It's not crippling anything.
The problem is more when you have him at 3.5M, DD at 3.5M, Emelin at 4.1, PAP still on cap. That more than compensates Patches and Gallagher's low cap hits though.

In any event, Bergevin has done very little to help bolster this top 6. That's the main issue.

Eller normally has great work ethic. The issue isn't so much the players (DD, Eller) but their linemates/deployment. They are both best as 3rd liners with actual 3rd liner minutes/deployment. One best suited for defensive C, the other a more offensive O and can be fine on wing.
