Morgan Rielly, LD
31 y/o, 4 years 7.5M (Full NMC until final year)
2025 3rd Round Pick

:leafs
Bryan Rust, RW/LW
33 y/o, 3 years 5.125M (Zero trade protections)

Pens board hasn't been thrilled about Rielly at all. However, I'd rather get the LD shored up, a small asset, and worry about an additional asset in Rielly's final year at the deadline (has a 10 team NT at that point) than trade Rust for some prospect at this point. I think Rakell has more value - he also has trade protections for those wondering.

Rust is exactly what Toronto could/can use being versatile (has proven he can play up and down the lineup and is a great PKer fwiw) and adding some scoring to their top 6 assuming Marner departs. Also know TO would like to move off of Rielly because of historical / 'dna' reasons.

So yeah. Toronto changes some DNA, gets a top 6'er with pedigree (he's clutch if nothing else), gains 2M in cap space, and replaces Marner on the PK. Pittsburgh gets an LD they sorely need and a couple (potential) assets.

It's already been said by Lebrun Rielly isn't going anywhere.

I do wonder about Rust though because Pittsburgh seems to be starting a rebuild although until Crosby and Malkin are gone I don't think they can fully commit to a rebuild, nor would I trust Dubas to do it.

Value wise it isn't terrible but makes no sense for the Pens given where they are going to be next season. Rielly won't waive his NMC for Pittsburgh.

Trading 55-60 points in the forward group for 45 points on the blueline while shoring up our atrocious left side.

I wouldn't be so sure on the NMC stuff. It's about as close to Toronto as he's gonna get regarding a trade.

Rielly's EV defense is atrocious. Last year his offense driving numbers were declining although he was still putting up great points. I haven't seen this years yet, but if that trend continued, this is going to be a mistake taking on 4 years without getting something back. I don't count the 3rd..

We definitely need to shore up our defense in general but Rust is one of our better trade chips and swapping him for a 31 year old doesn't make sense as we're highly unlikely to be competing for a playoff spot next season.

Like I posted on the Penguins board, if you want to do Rust for a LD, I don't know why you wouldn't do Rust+ for Byram rather than Rust for Rielly. Byram actually fits the timeline of this team while Rielly is a guy they should want to move immediately

If there are better deals for Rust that teams are eager to make, sure.

Toronto seems like an easy trade partner right now and getting the sure-fire top 4 LD with another dart in this years' draft - plus whatever capital down the line seems about as slam dunk for Rust as there is.

Rakell I'd get more creative with moving - assuming they're willing to.

Penguins need to be trading Rakkel, Rust, and EK65 for draft picks or young players on the cusp for contributing in the NHL.

They should not be taking on dudes in their 30’s that are a straight downgrade from the person they are trading away.

Outside of LD being bad in Pittsburgh, this makes absolutely no sense for them.

No thanks from Pittsburgh.

Does nothing to help the retool. *If* we're moving Rust and/or Rakell, it needs to be for futures.

There's literally a pick in the proposal for this years draft. You then work to get another in the final year of his [Rielly's] deal.

Fantasy land assuming Rust lands a top 4 LD prospect. Those players are not readily available.

Of course you could try and get 2 B tier prospects for a guy like Rust who amount to nothing....

As a Leafs fan, I'm reluctant to give the pick too, but ultimately do it. As a Pens fan, I only do it with the draft pick included, and only if Erik Karlsson is being traded out this summer.

Pens should ask for Robertson too. Leafs should say "Robertson or the pick, not both".
