Proposal: PIT - TOR

There's literally a pick in the proposal for this years draft. You then work to get another in the final year of his [Rielly's] deal.

Fantasy land assuming Rust lands a top 4 LD prospect. Those players are not readily available.

Of course you could try and get 2 B tier prospects for a guy like Rust who amount to nothing....
Yeah, not really interested in moving Rust for a 3rd rounder and a comparably aged defenseman with his own issues.

The likelihood of Rust retaining his value playing with Crosby is much higher than a defenseman retaining/growing his value on a rebuilding Pens team.

As a Leafs fan, I'm reluctant to give the pick too, but ultimately do it. As a Pens fan, I only do it with the draft pick included, and only if Erik Karlsson is being traded out this summer.

Pens should ask for Robertson too. Leafs should say "Robertson or the pick, not both".

Reasonable stance, Leafs could even include some rights to prospects like Niemela or Moldenhauer that Dubas was apart of drafting.

I think there is a chance that Rielly could waive for Pittsburgh as Dubas did sign him to that extension and has familiarity.

Rielly really needs to drop like 10-25 lbs and could be good again.

I like Rielly, but he's too old of a player for the Penguins to be targeting. It would be one thing if we got Dumba for free, who's on an expiring contract, with the hope of 'fixing' him and then flipping him. Rielly's contract is too long. Plus, I wouldn't want to trade Rust essentially 1-for-1 (yes, I know there's a 3rd in there) for him.

I know you didn't mean for the bolded to be a joke, but it's a funny one regardless.

If the best picks we get for our most valuable assets are third rounders, we are f***ed for significantly longer than I think any of us are cool with.

Penguins need to be trading Rakkel, Rust, and EK65 for draft picks or young players on the cusp for contributing in the NHL.

They should not be taking on dudes in their 30’s that are a straight downgrade from the person they are trading away.

Outside of LD being bad in Pittsburgh, this makes absolutely no sense for them.

I can see Rielly for karlson.

Leafs need a ppqb. Rielly could be a 2nd pair pmd for 2.5 less.

Having karlson and letang hogging pp1 makes no sense

Karlsson would need 2-3M retention for the deal to work $ wise.

Even then, I dont think Karlsson is any better than Rielly in his 18th season in the NHL.

If we could get a rust type player for rielly id do the deal.

Other wise id pass and hope he bounces back and builds his value up again

Rust has no trade protection starting in July. We should be shipping him off to the highest bidder with the most attractive piece (ie prospect or young roster player) this summer.

I would think teams like Detroit, Buffalo, Ottawa, etc would value guy like Rust in their locker room to try to help steer things the right way. He’s a good soldier, has cup pedigree, a very reasonable cap hit, and perhaps most importantly can’t block a trade to them.

Swapping him for another player whose best days are behind him (who would certainly block a trade here anyways) and a mid round pick to go with our dozens of others would be bad asset management.

Just not the return the Pens need here. Hiring the development coach suggest no older high cap hit is going to happen.

Trading 55-60 points in the forward group for 45 points on the blueline while shoring up our atrocious left side.

I wouldn't be so sure on the NMC stuff. It's about as close to Toronto as he's gonna get regarding a trade.
It's a good move in a vacuum but doesn't align with the long term plan. Dubas doesn't even want to sign late 20s UFAs let alone acquire a 31 year old. They'll age out too fast. Swap Reilly for a mid 20s equivalent and you're spot on.

Example: Bowen Byram. Would take more than Rust to aquire, no doubt, but that's what Dubas is looking for.
