And Leaf fans balked when everyone and their uncle said that Dubas was awful.

Good times

The contract Dubas gave out to him was heinous but I don't think anyone could have projected he'd fall off as hard as he did. When he signed that deal, he was coming off of a season with a .909 save% and a -2.8 GSAx, he was a perfectly mediocre starting goalie. He has completely collapsed since then.

Jarry is another marvelous example of "do not pay mediocre goalies". He's another guy on that Campbell/Merzlikins/Petersen group that wasn't good enough to justify the massive money/term they got.
This is such bullshit. Half of our board vomited upon signing. Just because you didn't doesn't mean "no one could have projected this!"

I remember Dubas went on a nice over explaining rant on exactly why he’d likely be re-signed as he used his excel sheet to rank him against other available goalies and was deemed the best option. What a plug lol

Yes, it was stupid of Dubas to sign a goalie to a long-term contract, but they idea that he's the only GM in the NHL dumb enough to do this is laughable. 90% of the GMs in the league buy into the nonsense that you need to lock up a goalie or else you're screwed.
Sooooo many GMs have been screwed over by this recently. Which is why I never wanted my Oil to sign Campbell. Especially coming off TWO years of Mike Smith providing Well Above League average goaltending for a measly 2.3M per. But incessant noise from media to go "fix" goaltending made us not realize how good we had it with Smith even though he was like 37 at the time.

Let's go down the List:
Blake -> Pettersson
Yzerman -> Husso
Holland -> Campbell
Francis -> Grubauer
Sakic -> Georgiev
Sweeney -> Swayman
Dubas -> Jarry
Kekkalainen -> Merzlikens

Which available goalies were better?

Haven't watched the Penguins closely. Looks like he and Nedejlkovic have almost identical numbers. What triggered this move now?

...and which one of them (two of which weren't "bad goalies" as much as injury-plagued ones) had a contract as long and as bad as Jarry has now??...
They were all bad at the time. A few getting better once moved to a new team doesn't help your argument, lol.

I thought of a few more, Mrazak and Vanichek were also traded.

TJ at 2.5M isn't unmovable.

Generally the pens defense has transitioned to absolute garbage starting with hextalls "overhaul" which hasn't been helping any of the goalies on the roster i honestly pity Blomquist whose development will probably be tanked being thrown in front of this feeble bunch once the initial rush of changing goalies wears off and the team plays like hot shit again.

That being said, Jarry started off looking like a legit starting goalie, and any pens fan who says otherwise is just spewing revisionist history. 99 percent of the pens board were walking around with chubbies over the idea of replacing Murray's seeming useless glove hand for Jarry and Murray also routinely shit the bed and jarry was doing well in the AHL.

He had a couple decent seasons and then just starting falling off a cliff. Part of it might be the mysterious health issues that he reportedly has. Part of it might be confidence issues. Part of it might be the team in front of him. Part of it is probably Sullivan.

But regardless he was terrible early in the season, was sent down, apparently played great in the AHL and actually played well when he first was recalled. But after that initial shine wore off he literally couldn't go a game without letting up a goal on one of the first three shots.

It was like clock work an just could not continue moving forward. Combine shitty play with just an air about him where he just didn't give a shit meant it was time to move on since the home crowd has been booing him when he let up his usually softy.

I feel like he's a guy that if he bottoms out, starts giving a shit and starts over in a new situation and is humbled by getting paid league minimum in the AHL for a bit he has like a 30 percent chance of rehabing his career and being a "meh" NHL goalie, but that is an absolute best case scenario.

Most likely he gets bought out in the off-season and goes onto being an AHL all-star for the next five years who gets called up by like LA or something three times a year where he steals two of those three games with everyone going "so that's what happened to Jarry".

Let's go down the List:

To be fair, Georgiev is kinda the anti-thesis to your post. Sakic only signed him 3 years, giving the team the flexibility to get out from under his abysmal play this season. It's Blackwood that could be the example, albeit this year you'd never know that given his play.

I'm like 95% sure that Blackwood is going to be the next goalie to join that Jarry/Merzlikins/Grubauer/ect group. It's just a question of how long he can be serviceable for Colorado before that happens.

10 good games so far.

Georgiev provided the Aves an entire season of good play. Their cup defense was derailed by their former friend Grubauer (and the Aves being a bad team). Not Georgiev playing poorly.

Maybe none, but then give your, at the time, up and down goalie a two year not a five year contract.
He was a pending UFA. It was a bad deal in hindsight and I didn't love it to begin with, but people act like it's inconceivable that anyone would sign the guy to that deal. In reality, he was 2 time all star and the big name free agent goalie that offseason. Korpisalo was the other big name UFA and he got 5 years x 4MM. Elvis Merzlikins had recently signed for 5 x5.4MM.

Jarry got paid fair market for what he was. He fell off a cliff and isn't worth that now. If he was playing the same hockey he did up until this season he'd be making fair market value.
