OT: Pirates Talk: That Skenes guy is okay at teh baseball

Pittsburgh signed Darell Morel for $1,778,600 and Johan De Los Santos for 2.25M. Fangraphs had De Los Santos as FV40+ and Morel as FV40.

It's annoying how dragged out the Saski thing was when it was painfully obvious he was going to the Dodgers.

Just another example of how fundamentally broken baseball is.

Not the Yankees before the luxury tax?

I don't think Sasaki to the Dodgers was a foregone conclusion. As good as the Dodgers are at maximizing pitchers, their pitchers are pretty fragile. Mariners would have been an interesting choice because they have some pitching coaching mojo going right now.

I think it has shown that the Dodgers are now the default team in our league, like a Real Madrid in Spain, Man City in England, Paris St. Germain or Bayern Munich.

It's a little antithetical to how we do sports in the US. But baseball is different, and Los Angeles does have systemic advantages (weather, pretty women, diverse population, access to direct flights to home countries) that other places don't have. The only downside are the taxes.

no the yankees were always so rich and stupid while the dodgers are so rich and smart

This kind of shit just reinforces cheap owners to be cheap. Why spend money when you simply cannot contend with the Dodgers?

It's not fair to focus on owners who take advantage of the system. Or to excuse their actions either.

The old trope of don't blame the player, blame the game applies.

Cheap owners are going to cheap no matter what as the system is a money making machine. I don't blame Nutting if I am going to be fair. If someone gave me a billion dollars to have nasty things said about me, I wouldn't even think twice.

In a perverse way this is actually good for baseball. The more unbalanced they get and top heavy the sooner things might change as they lose fans.

I understand the fan frustration, but any free agent player unless they're trying to get a rebound contract, or no one else offered them a major league deal there's no reason to sign with the Pirates, it's a poorly run organization from the top down. Scouting, player evaluations, development, and the major league on field management and product all suck, at this point it's not the lack of spending because we all expect that, it's the fact after years of bad decisions they've made themselves a destination of last resort for any players they didn't draft. I always joke with my friends when we discuss possible free agents that the Pirates scouts and FO look at the back of the remaining players baseball cards, it's like, oh look he did this in 2019, or 2022, let's sign him, maybe we'll get lucky.

Sadly, that's all true.

I don't even care if the Pirates win at this point because the league is so broken, I just want to see them develop likeable stars and keep them. This team is never going to win a World Series again unless the fundamentals of the MLB get broken down, so I just want this team to draft guys like Skenes and McCutchen and keep them for their entire careers.

I don't think it's that surprising with him having another 2 pre-arb years, but it's also silly because he's basically guaranteed to price himself out of Pittsburgh with another year or two like last year.

I wish they'd go for it because Skenes is more likely in their price range now than in another year, but it wouldn't surprise me if he's already out of their price range tbh

It's not surprising for a lot of reasons. Long story short, I'll be stunned if he pitches an inning as a Pirate after his 6th MLB season.

Not a total disaster but definitely some embarrassing moments at PiratesFest lol.

But one of the most interesting answers from the session came from Cherington when he was asked if he personally feels like he's on the hot seat heading into the 2025 season. After saying he's felt that every day since being hired in 2019, Cherington said he now has "clarity."
"It’s so clear what we all care about: winning. There’s other stuff we care about too right? We want to do other things to as an organization but at the very highest level, at the very top of that list, is winning," Cherington said. "It’s so clear. It’s so clear to me after five years, that’s what matters most to the people in this room, to the people of Pittsburgh and it’s definitely what matters most to me. It’s what matters to everyone on this stage. We’re going to do whatever we can to get to that as fast as possible. I don’t do that because I’m worried about myself, I do that because I want to be a part of delivering that in a place like Pittsburgh, where it matters. You could feel that energy in the ball park last year when things were going better, we were winning and the place was full. Talk about a drug. That’s a drug, you want more of that. It’s incredibly motivating. So, I don’t worry about myself. I worry about what are we doing to help the Pirates win more games as fast as possible."

BC makes some bs comment like this. Yet what has he really done to improve their chances of winning next season?
Nothing but lip service. Straight up lying to the fans.

Nutting a disgrace of a human, not worth posting what I hope happens to him.
Or he could just sell the team, take his billion and GTFO.
