Without reading more than page 1 of this thread - I love that Chevy is signing these guys before playoffs. Sometimes players/teams have a ton of jam when new contracts are handed out, everyone should be fired up.
It's a fair signing for both parties.
2RHD don't grow on trees.
If he plays like he did after JMo went down in the playoffs or against the Oilers, this is a great deal. If Stanley played with the mean streak Pionk has, he'd be 5 times better.
As far as Sammy goes, I'd like to see Chevy lock him up before he is eligible for an offer sheet.
If they aren't signed to a sheet before that.Correct me if I'm wrong but if he ops for arbitration which I expect both him and Gabe to do then he'd no longer be eligible for an OS?
I'm in hell now (with all due respect to my hallowed workplace), and really can't dent this thick ice sheet. How about that another player that likes and wants to play here, hell is close to freezing over
Better call over Iafallo with his chainsaw! How about that another player that likes and wants to play here, hell is close to freezing over
Heinola is never going to be a number 2 defenseman on any team and we also have no clue what Salomonsson is going to turn out to be. At the very least this now gives Salomonsson and the Jets more time to try and develop him.It feels like an overpay to me. I almost would have rather those funds go towards Ehlers who is more difficult to replace than Pionk considering we have Heinola and Salomonsson waiting in the wings.

TGI Samberg. Pionk should be paying him a $4M/year commission for the next 6. Better hope Samberg doesn't arbitrate his way right to UFA after next season...
Context matters though.
How many of those players are bottom pairing or replacement level guys like Fleury and Stanley, playing with Pionk on the top 4 because of injury? Then, when they go back to their heavy sheltering on the bottom pair, put up better numbers than when they are playing way above their capabilities.
Samberg has been much better with Pionk than without him.
Pionk has consistently been our second highest scoring defenseman since he's been here. Take him out of the lineup and we have nobody on defense to replace that offense. But it would be easy for Chevy to trade for another Pionk or sign one in Free agency.Pionk has his ups and downs, but I like what he brings and how he plays. No problem with the deal. And if you let him go, who would replace him? Tiny Hinny Heinola? Not in this life time. I think we are seeing the last of Heinola.

One year too long and about $500K aav more than I would have liked, but its market value for a 10g, 40pt, RHD that plays in your top 4. I just don't think we'll be happy with this contract in 3+ yrs. But hey, 3+ yrs is 3+ yrs from now. Alot can happen in 3+ yrs.
And remarkably similar to the developmental path the organization laid out for Samberg. Also Salomonsson's game leads more to taking over DeMelo's role then Pionk's. Given how DeMelo's game has fallen off a bit the last two years it wouldn't surprise me if DeMelo is on the bottom pairing in another couple of years, opening up a top 4 spot for Elias.
Edit:
That actually seems to be how they set up his progression path. In another year a spot on the bottom pairing opens up, and then two years after that DeMelo is off the books. So to me it looks like the development plan is 2 years x Moose, 2x third pairing and then top 4.
This is a great point. He was a real pleasure to watch last night. Think I'm just going to throw away all my misgivings and celebrate this (until I hear the AAV)*.
The bigger story is how Chevy is getting business done well before the off-season and before any crazy cap inflation.
This team is on a roll but so is our GM
*Addendum: 6x$7M is just fine
