Stupid question, but would it have been a violation if Pinto had used a VPN or remote desktop or something to access his US based sportsbook from out of country?
Not a stupid question.
But they use geo-location software, that includes
VPN
GPS data
Wi-fi triangulation

Cannot bet out of state, so account was flagged for monitoring

We can't plaster gambling ads all over everything, have the networks fully embrace it, have ESPN post live odds during the game, and then turn around and still ban people for doing it like it's the 70's.

Pick a lane.
stop that right now!----there is NOTHING like an odd man rush and suddenly having the screen obliterated with ads and numbers, plusses and minuses, and having Kenny Albert say "here comes McDavid, clock winding down, crucial momentum shift here. Defense on their latest fan duel odds on the top of your screen that was some goal Enzo"

Why not? What's wrong with a double standard? Are pro athletes too stupid to understand that once they sign a pro sports contract, they may be limited in what they're allowed to do. But they should make it simple - any pro athlete who is caught placing a bet of any size on a pro sporting event of any kind should be banned for life from all professional sports. There should be large rewards for turning in such athletes as well.

Yeah, I get any kind of work policy limiting your behavior, but the policy should make sense.

If they're not gambling on their own games and potentially harming the integrity of the sport, what's the problem? The evidence suggests these were non-NHL bets.

Does the policy exist for moral reasons or because the league is against gambling? Obviously not, which was my point.

I just think the no pro sports betting at all makes for something nice and simple for these nitwit players to understand.

Certainly can't ban people for gambling.

Obviously you have to ban players/coaches who directly impact the outcomes of games to maintain the integrity of the competition. Also, should exclude from gambling the people who theoretically have knowledge not available to the public.

Wouldn't it have been lovely if Pinto had told Bettman that his transgression stemmed from a gambling problem - one that had seemingly innocent origins.

Turns out Pinto likes to watch NHL games on TV in order to keep up to date with other teams and goings on in the League. Sadly, in the process he was exposed to so many f***ing gambling ads, he resolve was worn down, he lost his way, and got swept up in an obsession.

Job related risk I guess.

Honestly yes, pro athletes in general are pretty dull.

Those ads are basically targeting individuals like them, meatheads with disposable income.

There is a difference in regular advertising and total spam 24/7, sports betting has poisoned every aspect of the league:

1.Non stop ads
2.Non stop promotion with the spread trash literally being promoted on TSN/ESPN etc and on ice advertisement
3.Top players literally promoting it

Sports betting has made everybody's life worse except the .01% of owners/players/sports book owners.

And as fans we totally have a right to voice our opinion that this stuff is total trash.

That genie is already out. They are big source of income right now as companies are trying to grab market share. I think ads will lesson as the industry starts to shake out and stabilize.
Don't bet on that, tobacco advertising was literally everywhere even when the market was massive. F1 teams had deals with brands like Phillip Morris well into the 2000s, in fact the first team to run without any kind of sponsorship from tobacco didn't happen until the last 25 years. What it's going to take is something similar to how the government cracked down on tobacco advertising, it's just going to proliferate until then.

It’s laughable that the NHL that bends so many rules during games and in suspension deliberations, held Pinto’s feet to the fire on this to that degree. I personally don’t gamble a lot and I don’t judge those that do, but his indiscretions seem very minor in the big picture. If it was meant to be preemptive then I wish the NHL would use that approach for on ice rules adjudication.

Just another day on the NHL wheel of decision making.

Honestly, I would say that sports betting has had little to no impact on my life. The ads are no different than any other ad. I just tune them out. Same with any gambling segrment during the broadcast or something like Sportscentre.

Why would I care if top players are promoting it?

Don’t bank on it, we’ve had sports gambling for hundreds of years and an easing of the regulations about 20 years ago in the UK and the number of gambling adverts just keeps on increasing.

A good place
... That's kinda the point. It's the fact that this is essentially being equated to Voynov beating the piss out of his wife.
Gambling could destroy the entire integrity of the sport.

Beating your wife, though horrible, does not challenge the competitive spirit of the game. That’s the reason gambling is harshly penalized. It could ruin the integrity of the game.

Yes that sounds like someone that has grown a lot through all this. His agent needs to advise him to stfu about this.
