Jeff O'Neil who I think is a tell it like it is guy despite his leaf bias said the players will treat this tourney somewhere between the Olympics and the World Championships. I hope it will be fantastic hockey but the timing of it is odd and no one wants to see a superstar or one of their club teams better players get hurt midseason playing in this tourney.
I do agree it will be much better than the unwatchable AST weekend .

A lot of fans are just stating facts. AP isn’t injured, obviously. He just played 24+ minutes. He (imo) sees this “Allstar” break event as not important. More players will follow his lead. And a great many fans are hopeful their team’s players, who were selected, opt out too.

Dangerous game to play with the Olympics around the corner. But some players really don't like hockey much anyway and see it as a job so perhaps they would prefer 2 weeks off over the Olympics.

Withdrawing from this event will not be seen in a positive light by decision makers.

A pointless All-Star game taking up 5 days of the schedule still beats a pointless tournament taking up two weeks.

The fact that they refused twice to interrupt their schedule for the Olympics, but will stop the season for this dumb shit casual fans couldn't care less about is peak NHL marketing stupidity.

I doubt management teams in the Olympics give two shits about a player opting not to play in a bad impersonation of the Olympics.

Unfortunately this will be nothing like Canada/World Cup and Olympic hockey. Happening mid-season it's going to be glorified all star games. There will be more players dropping out to recover from bumps and bruises and the ones that play will be avoiding injuries at all costs.

All while the league increases the risk of their prized revenue generating elite players getting injured. The Allstar game is for kids. It builds future fans. This tournament is a waste.

The league could take the approach of suspending a player for a game as they do for the all star game but I am not talking the league. I am talking about the executives that are putting their pride on the line in making these selections and prepping for a monumental games in 2026.

Players, yes players, have been clamoring for best on best for a long time and were very unhappy about the way 2018 and 22 were treated. Will some players have legitimate issues? Yes - Matthews is clearly not 100% and won't be but he wants to play and probably will.

So getting best on best has been asked for by players for a very long time so I don't see players and executives treating this as casually as many seem to think here.

I'm not really sure the ASG was building that many future fans anyways. Maybe in the hosting city, but not on TV.

If they wanted to put some real stakes to the ASG to incentivize some player participation, do like the MLB and give the winning conference home ice in the SCFs.

... Or go crazy with some shit that would never happen. Give players a 1% bonus for participating. Another 1% for winning. You'd probably get a hell of a lot more entertaining game if Leon was playing with a $140K bonus on the line.

They do when they don't show up for the ASG.

I think Lidstrom and Datsyuk ate one gamers for this back in the early 2010s. Others too. I just remember it for Detroit. Ovechkin might have, too.

Soon after players just started saying don't pick me.

Sadly, unless something changes soon, we're probably not seeing him in the Olympics ever again, either.

I can't necessarily disagree with the Olympic committee not allowing the country to participate, but it still sucks.
 
Should be Doughty, easily.

Having not played in a very long time he'll be well rested, he's used to playing lots of minutes and with tough matchups, and he's a proven winner. No need to overthink it.

Olympics was never about the break, it was about insurance and other major costs. They also couldn’t use any Olympic footage in marketing.
 
Every team is sending impact players.

Every player, for the most part, is dealing with at least something.

Pietrangelo is not on IR or LTIR

I hope the rest of the teams pull their guys.

F Vegas. Every player needs the rest. Your guy isn’t on IR. You aren’t the exception to the rule.
