Jeff O'Neil who I think is a tell it like it is guy despite his leaf bias said the players will treat this tourney somewhere between the Olympics and the World Championships. I hope it will be fantastic hockey but the timing of it is odd and no one wants to see a superstar or one of their club teams better players get hurt midseason playing in this tourney.
I do agree it will be much better than the unwatchable AST weekend .

A lot of fans are just stating facts. AP isn’t injured, obviously. He just played 24+ minutes. He (imo) sees this “Allstar” break event as not important. More players will follow his lead. And a great many fans are hopeful their team’s players, who were selected, opt out too.

Sure beats an all star weekend

A pointless All-Star game taking up 5 days of the schedule still beats a pointless tournament taking up two weeks.

The fact that they refused twice to interrupt their schedule for the Olympics, but will stop the season for this dumb shit casual fans couldn't care less about is peak NHL marketing stupidity.

Dangerous game to play with the Olympics around the corner. But some players really don't like hockey much anyway and see it as a job so perhaps they would prefer 2 weeks off over the Olympics.

Unfortunately this will be nothing like Canada/World Cup and Olympic hockey. Happening mid-season it's going to be glorified all star games. There will be more players dropping out to recover from bumps and bruises and the ones that play will be avoiding injuries at all costs.

I'm not really sure the ASG was building that many future fans anyways. Maybe in the hosting city, but not on TV.

If they wanted to put some real stakes to the ASG to incentivize some player participation, do like the MLB and give the winning conference home ice in the SCFs.

... Or go crazy with some shit that would never happen. Give players a 1% bonus for participating. Another 1% for winning. You'd probably get a hell of a lot more entertaining game if Leon was playing with a $140K bonus on the line.

Sadly, unless something changes soon, we're probably not seeing him in the Olympics ever again, either.

Olympics was never about the break, it was about insurance and other major costs. They also couldn’t use any Olympic footage in marketing.
