Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube was thrilled to see Philippe Myers will be sticking around for another two seasons.
The team announced Friday that they signed Myers to a two-year extension that carries an AAV of $850K. Despite not getting much playing time through the first two months of the season, Myers stuck it out and made the most of his chances, which has since sparked debates about the makeup of the defence pairings.
“I’m very happy for him. I thought in camp he earned a job, which is important for a guy like that coming in,” Berube said of Myers. “He played extremely well in training camp and here he’s got a two-year deal and he’s playing for us, and he’s playing well. He’s physical, he’s simple, on the penalty kill and he’s got great size and reach.”
Myers had been primarily skating with the extras to begin the season, but it became obvious how much the coaching staff and management were impressed with his abilities. Although Myers wasn’t getting into games, the team demonstrated their commitment and belief in him by doing everything they could to keep him away from waivers.
Myers was assigned on a conditioning loan to allow him additional playing time with the Toronto Marlies, in part due to the fear of losing him on the waiver wire for nothing.
It was a good bet for the team to make in keeping him around because he has rewarded them with strong defensive play of late.
“I just love being around the boys,” Myers said on what he enjoys most about being a Leaf. “We got a good group, a really good team. We got a chance to make something happen this year and the goal is obviously the Stanley Cup. It’s just awesome, it’s amazing. It’s an Original-Six team and growing up, I watched them a lot on TV. It’s just really an honour to be here and to represent the team.”
Myers has picked up two assists through 11 games so far this season while also forming a strong partnership with Morgan Rielly. The duo have controlled nearly 60 percent of the expected goals at 5v5, which is the second highest among pairings with at least 100 minutes behind only Rielly-Chris Tanev.
