Happy with this deal.

I liked Myers when he was drafted by the Flyers, and looks like Leafs management likes him as well.

Think he has some untapped potential that hopefully puts him in as our 3RHD. Seems more defensively sound and physical than Timmins, without Timmins shooting and offense. Seems decent at moving the puck out and playing a simple game in his own end.

Does this mean he can go between the Leafs and Marlies without waivers?

no

I'm happy with the signing... cheap depth, it works.

No.

But a team has to cover an additional 2 years of contract now.

I expect Benoit/Timmins to be shipped out for a forward and to be replaced by Rifai, who by all indications, is ready for a regular bottom-pairing role.

He’s a perfectly decent 7/8 D, I’m good with this. When you send a player to the AHL, the cap relief is up to the min NHL salary (currently 775K) + 375K. So players with a salary of $1.15 mil or less take up zero NHL cap when they’re in the AHL. Then when he’s in the NHL, his salary is barely over the min anyways.

Nothing wrong with this deal, and I’ve been happy with his play, for a 7/8 type D.

For teams that are very cost conscious, these types of deals don’t make sense, don’t want to commit the real dollars. But for teams like the Leafs, where this money is nothing and only the cap matters, these deals make perfect sense. They also dissuade the cost-conscious teams from grabbing Myers off waivers when we send him up/down.

I think it's Timmins that is sweating the most after this deal.

I think Timmins gets moved in a package. RHD and still room to grow, someone will find value.

Still love the idea of getting Connor Murphy from the Blackhawks, and sending Timmins as part of the package would have value to Chicago. Timmins has shown he can play minimum 3RHD.

Definitely a better fit to play with Rielly then Timmins given he leans more defensive then offensive.

Good guy to have. He knows and fits into the system, albeit, in a diminished role. He can fit into the 3rd pairing without too much loss. I think the benefits of having this guy signed outweigh the benefits of leaving him open to waivers.

All good, classic leafs using cash to protect players from waiver claim type of move.

We now have 9 defencemen on NHL contracts next year plus Timmons as an RFA. 5 of those are about league minimum so not really an issue. Just interesting.
