It's a good gesture. In a city as passionate as Philly these kinds of things are important and appreciated. It sucks for the fans when a guy is underperforming, but it sucks even more if it appears that the player doesn't care that he's underperforming. Fans want to feel like they are part of the team and being acknowledged by the players is a great way to accomplish that. Plenty of guys out there don't or wouldn't do that.
 
Utley hadn’t even played a full season in the bigs at that point either. He went to have one of the best ~7 year stretches in the modern era of baseball. I don’t see that in Stott’s future. Utley’s worst full(ish) season with the Phillies is pretty much what Stott is doing this year.

Philly fans are pushing the comp too far. Utley is a HOF guy for a lot of people. One of the best players in the league at his peak. That’s usually a stay away.

Stott most likely won’t come close to having the thump Utley did. And if he does somehow have it in there, he’ll likely be sacrificing that contact rate to get to it.

Utley was like the best base runner in the league also (the forgotten component).

I get so happy when Utley is brought up because I’m often put in the role of saying a Philadelphia athlete is overrated. But Utley is somehow underrated while also being universally beloved. It’s the weirdest combo.

Like FLYguy said, 7 years is the generally accepted measurement of sustained peak. He’s in a functional tie for 7th place all time in bWAR7 among 2nd Basemen. One of the 6 with clearly higher peaks retired within the last 60 years. Morgan is clearly the best post-Robinson 2B. You ,any prefer Carew to Utley for 2nd place, but the point is that it’s reasonable to make either choice.

Average Joe Blanton. One of my all time favorites. I love the following year or maybe 2010 when they had the presser with the "4 Aces" and Joe Blanton was there and they were asking Hamels how it felt to be the only pitcher on such a decorated staff with World Series experience or something to that effect and he was like, "I'm pretty sure Joe has World Series experience" or something like that. Good times.

He had absolutely nutty OPS+ and wRC+ during his Phillies tenure too. The dude was a menace. He's the most deserved HoFer from those teams
