How can you possibly HATE Kyle Schwarber?

I get he hits some nice homeruns... but overall package he's barely even a league average player. Really annoying to see him in LF and leading off every game. Strikes out looking constantly. It's admittedly more a personal annoyance with him than anything, but I can't stand him as a player.

But hate is indeed strong, because I do like his personality, as opposed to Nick who is really obnoxious.

Castellanos is a fringe league average hitter this year, and the narrative is it’s a resurgent year. That’s also because he was one of the worst players in the league last year. Schwarber is the worst defender in baseball, but thankfully, the NL has a DH now. Look past Schwarber though, by whatever metric, and Castellanos is on the short list for the next worst defender in baseball.

By his bat, Schwarber has been a top 25-30% guy both years. He’s better. He’s more consistent. Neither of these guys should ever see the field.

He's only in LF because of Harper's TJ surgery. He would have been DH for most of, if not the entire year if not for that. Next season, he should be DHing full-time, whether Harper plays 1B or RF full-time. If he has a season at the plate even close to this one next season while not hurting them in the field, his value shoots up a ton. Plus, he's a tremendous clubhouse leader and by all accounts a great dude.

Castellanos is the biggest issue heading into the future. They've gotta find a way to move him.

Schwarber’s played the field in 3 of their last 15 games (1 of those was in the second game of a double header). He’s slated to DH again tonight. The last two months have been his best months at the plate (both .900+ OPS). This month so far he’s over 1.000 OPS. So he can have value if you’re pretty much only asking him to bat.

He probably ends up around a 2 win above replacement player if he primarily played DH this year. I’d imagine that Phillies when they signed would have imagined he would have played more DH to this point but unfortunately Harper’s injuries have made that difficult.

The only way I could see the Phillies getting any value on moving Castellanos is if they gamble on another seemingly bad contract. Otherwise, probably best to pay to offload him?

Schwarber's OF defense rates so poorly that he actually loses WAR compared to being a DH even with the DH WAR adjustment which is like -17.5 runs over a 162 game*4 AB season.

Schwarbers wRC+ puts him offensively is 21% above the league average hitter.

If he was strictly DHing this year he's probably around 2.0 to 2.5 WAR, approaching 3.0 WAR.

Castellanos grades better in the OF, but worse as a hitter. His wRC+ puts him about 8% above the league average hitter.

Ok, I give. Maybe one of you who are more versed in analytics can explain this to me. Why does Rob have the best power hitter on the team, who is hitting under .200, leading off?

Because his hitting is even worse when he doesn’t bat leadoff.

It’s not analytics really. The importance of batting order is usually overstated. He feels comfortable leading off, the team is collectively hitting, and he’s 3rd on the team in OBP. The only players higher than him are Harper, who will never lead off, and Marsh, who is quite comfortable down in the order with less pressure.
