This is purely a hockey trade, nothing to do with any player's ethnic background.

Looking at the two teams, Montreal is attempting to win now with Price especially after dealing Subban for Weber. Philly is Giroux plus the kids where his age and more importantly his prime will probably end a couple years before the whole team peaks together.

So...

To Montreal: Claude Giroux $8.275m for 5 years

To Philadelphia: Alex Galchenyuk $2.8m 1y RFA, David Desharnais $3.5m 1y UFA (expiring dump to even out salaries, negative value)

Leaving aside the huge disparity in value for a moment...

2.8 + 3.5 = 6.3

How does that even out salaries?

I personally wouldn't trade Galchenyuk for Giroux, not because I think Galchenyuk is better (Giroux is obviously elite), but because I feel it wouldn't be a fair trade in the long run. Let the kid prove himself, he's doing great with MTL (well he's injured now, but he was doing great).

I don't really see a scenario where we could trade Giroux to the Habs and break even in the trade, much less win it, and that's leaving aside the intangibles Giroux brings to our team. I just think the Habs don't have the right pieces to make it happen. Although generally, I can't see us dealing him at all, which suits me fine.

I want your elite, franchise-defining asset but I don't want to pay. Gimme.

Galchenyuk isnt ''paying''?

I get it, people love to hate on the Habs, but give me a break with saying that ''Giroux >>>>>>Galchenyuk''. AG was off to a better start than Giroux this year, his 1st year as C, playing top minutes, He's also 4 years younger & wont be making $9 000 000/year (not on his next contract at least).

For Giroux?

No.

It is not paying.

To be fair, Gally would be a part of that hypothetical deal.

Also, Giroux historically has bad starts, also probably linked to why the flyers struggle out of the gate. His point totals are despite usually having a very low ppg the first 10-15 games if the season. This happens almost every year.

Seriously, though, Galchenyuk is emerging as potentially the best of the 2012 draft picks, and your point about the age fit is duly noted, but there remains a good bit of pot-sweetening to be done to pry away the Flyers' heart-and-soul captain. Desharnais seems to be the festering boil on every Canadiens' fan trade proposal and while I don't think he deserves the hate he receives, his trade value is neutral at very best.

As a counter-offer, how about Mark Streit for Desharnais + 1st (weak draft)?

What about:
Galchenyuk, sergagev, McCarron, a first + Desharnais for Giroux

This is awful for Montreal now.

I agree that Galchenyuk doesn't quite have Giroux's value right now. Would probably take something like Galchenyuk + Danault/Beaulieu IF Philadelphia wanted to trade him and go younger. Chucky is a #1 centre and can potentially replace Giroux's production. He's point per game this year and has a 30 goal season at 22.

Danault or Beaulieu depending if they want middle 6 depth or a mid pairing D. Both young and fit into Philly's age.

Points aren't even close to the only consideration in valuation.

Is Galchenyuk a borderline-elite defensive center that can win a high percentage of defensive-zone draws? Can he play the PK? Is he capable of running one of the best PP lines in the entire NHL right now? Can he be relied on to be the team's best forward in quite literally every situation on the ice? Is he consistent enough that he can be relied on to produce and drive play even when the rest of the team is ice cold?

Gally is a fine asset and he could very well be even better than Giroux in the future for all I know, but a straight up trade would crush this franchise right now. Gally is only a start to the conversation if you want what Giroux brings right now.

I can't even understand this opinion. Where is your head for this?

"hes young and scored 30 once"

Listen, I think chuck is great young player and you would be wise to hold on to him. However, to say that you would tell the flyers no if this deal is on the table is completely asinine as others in this thread have mentioned (specifically Juicy Pop's points)

I'm assuming Galchenyuk > Giroux in market value and that Giroux waives his NMC for this one situation.

The difference in salary is almost $2m/y with Montreal having like $1.2m in cap currently. When 40% of the season is over, Montreal will have enough room to take on the extra cap.

I believe after this deal, Montreal can run for the Cup immediately and at least two more times after this. Giroux had an epic matchup against Sidney Crosby a few years ago and if Montreal wants to make the Final, I believe it must go through Pittsburgh. With a true 1C, 1D, 1G, plus a gamebreaking W (Radulov), they can match up against Tampa Bay too.

For Philly, they now have a potential 1C that will peak around the same time with the younger team. In a couple of years they can run for several years in a row like Hextall's previous team, the Kings.

Is this deal fairly even or does one side or the other need to hand over some futures to make the value work?

Please put down the crack pipe!

Jesus ..with all this montreal in 'win now' crap. half the league is in win now. price is good for at least another 6 years..giroux is the better player but stop with this win now.
galchenyuk is fast becoming a point a game player. we'll keep our young guys and retool
