This is purely a hockey trade, nothing to do with any player's ethnic background.

Looking at the two teams, Montreal is attempting to win now with Price especially after dealing Subban for Weber. Philly is Giroux plus the kids where his age and more importantly his prime will probably end a couple years before the whole team peaks together.

So...

To Montreal: Claude Giroux $8.275m for 5 years

To Philadelphia: Alex Galchenyuk $2.8m 1y RFA, David Desharnais $3.5m 1y UFA (expiring dump to even out salaries, negative value)

I'm assuming Galchenyuk > Giroux in market value and that Giroux waives his NMC for this one situation.

The difference in salary is almost $2m/y with Montreal having like $1.2m in cap currently. When 40% of the season is over, Montreal will have enough room to take on the extra cap.

I believe after this deal, Montreal can run for the Cup immediately and at least two more times after this. Giroux had an epic matchup against Sidney Crosby a few years ago and if Montreal wants to make the Final, I believe it must go through Pittsburgh. With a true 1C, 1D, 1G, plus a gamebreaking W (Radulov), they can match up against Tampa Bay too.

For Philly, they now have a potential 1C that will peak around the same time with the younger team. In a couple of years they can run for several years in a row like Hextall's previous team, the Kings.

Is this deal fairly even or does one side or the other need to hand over some futures to make the value work?

I'll trade you his twin brother Laude [+MacDonald] for Galchenyuk and Desharnais. How does that sound? He's not quite as skilled as he's a pure PP specialist and he's not exactly captain material, but he should do well enough.

If that doesn't suit your fancy, maybe you would be interested in his cousin? http://prowrestling.wikia.com/wiki/Claude_Giroux

Claude Giroux stands for the Philadelphia Flyers and everything the Flyers are all about. He is the Philadelphia Flyers.

And no, he is not traded.

Uh, guy? I don't know if you've seen or not but according to the plethora of Habs proposals lately, Galchenyuk is an elite #1C and would even be a lateral move for a guy like Tavares.
Have some Respeck.

I love that not only are we giving up Giroux for Galchenyuk, we're also getting Desharnais back! What an incredible deal.

I don't think that assumption is realistic. It's not the easiest suggestion to disprove, given that we haven't seen many trades to match this design, so the value of the gained cap space is up for (some) debate. I don't think its value is particularly close to making Galchenyuk's value higher than Giroux's.

It's true, you can strike two or three ">"s by now. There's still two or three left in Giroux's favour, though.

I dig how some of the same say you need to pay a premium on patches because he's a captain but a guy with elite leadership skills stats only count....Go figure?
