and it's also worth noting while you can definitely look at paper, look at schemes and player evaluations and say this guy can be replaced by this other guy.

It certainly can have an impact to the morale/approach of a defensive unit who just utterly dominated and then let a whole bunch of the guys who were part of that domination go.

I've watched during the year (especially during the playoffs) a lot of those sidelines clips, between plays stuff and Baun really seemed to be a huge part of talking to the defense and lifting guys up.

It's something to consider. My thoughts are that only Becton would be missing next year on offense, and with Steen - and especially Stoutland - being back, it's basically the same offensive talent. Kellen Moore? I thought he had some great moments, but I see him as a B/B+ OC and eminently replaceable.

On the defensive side of the ball, having Baun and Dean sews up that area of the field. The DBs are good. The line will be missing (in this scenario) Williams, Sweat, and Graham. The Eagles showed they could excel even without Graham. Hunt played some good ball in the playoffs, Ojomo didn't embarrass himself, and with this draft being rich with DLine talent, under Fangio's tutelage (not to mention the pipe dream of Garrett), I like what's coming back in 2025.

If there is any way we can bring back both Baun and Becton, that is my preference. Everyone else else should be replaceable.

This core is strong enough to run it back a couple times. Shore up LB and OL and they have plenty of young talent to fill in the other gaps

Saban talked about poaching from your former team in that Belichick chat. No Bueno.

He also talked about hiring coordinators. He said something akin to hiring somebody that does what you do well. Why should 30 guys change for 1 guy?

Probably different at the college vs pro levels though.

The only reason they should sign Becton is if they think he'll eventually kick back outside as Lane's replacement

He’s significantly, significantly worse at Tackle than he is a guard. He’s a decent guard. Not bad but definitely not above average-to-great. Great at run blocking though. They’d be better off drafting Lane’s replacement at some point down the line.

I’m assuming his family still lives down south? I’m guessing that’s also reasoning for leaving?

He’s got another son that’s a big high school recruit for the 2027 cycle that plays high school ball in Texas. Obviously his other son plays at LSU.

Yep.

And the wife is from Western Louisiana near the Texas border. The way it was told in LSU circles, they never fully left the area.

I was just looking his career arch which is kind of weird for being a QB/Offense background coach. He’s been stuck at the OC level for college & positional coach for the NFL for a decade plus now until now. He’s not young for a guy that has not elevated to that point either at 54 years old.

You typically get pushed up the ladder with those background even if you’re just mediocre.

They’re all getting promotions though. So it’s kind of hard to enforce that.

It sucks but you can’t really fault someone for taking an opportunity with bigger pay & a move up that ladder in stature.
Right but they're signing contracts. They're not just getting a job like I have. Players aren't allowed to just go somewhere else. Sure they can hold out and leverage their hand, but they're still under contract and their team still has to trade them.

I've said if before, I'm not trying to stop people from getting promotions, and I know this makes me sound like the asshole. But there has to be SOME brakes pumped here. There just has to be a way to encourage some continuity that's reasonable for everyone involved here. Allow coaches opt out clauses? Adopt a 10/5 rights status like the MLB? That's actually not a bad idea. 10/5 is too long, maybe like...5/3? Idk I'm just spitballing. I don't have answers.

What you DON'T want is just being like "oh well you have to coach out your contract" because then every coach contract is going to be one year. We can't have stuff that's easily exploitable.

This already exists in various forms. You can block lateral moves. You can just overpay the slot like the Eagles do with Stoutland and Fangio or the Bucs tried to do with Liam Coen.

Or you can hire a HC that calls plays. The Broncos will never have this specific problem. But that's not the power structure here, so it's more of a problem for the Eagles than most other teams. That's not a complaint. It's an acknowledgment that everything has downsides.

Not every assistant gets multiple years either. Some of these guys just sign on for 1. They've fulfilled their contracts when the league calendar flips.

I was trying to find out what Moore's eagles contract was but couldn't find it

I see what you mean about play calling. Coordinators (especially offensive) calling the plays for your team makes this an inherent problem. It makes those guys that much more tantalizing as HC candidates

I don't believe it was ever made public.

Exactly. This is why I have been yelling for years that I want a grizzled old DC who is happier taking low end HC money to be comfortable. Of course that only works because Lurie is willing to write the check. Love you forever, Jerry.

Ideally I want my HC calling offensive plays to go along with that, but that's a problem for the medium term future. Since those offensive guys tend to be younger, it's harder to keep them without the promotion.

Should have signed Chip to be the OC.

Who's your pick to replace Moore?

I should edit. Who is out there that you think would fit with what the roster can do?

I literally wanted to do this.

(To not you: Everyone knows it's not happening and why. He's just a great fit for their personnel.)

I would guess they probably just promote from within. If not, Frank Reich. I don't want Reich, but it's not like it would be Bobby Slowik bad. Someone said Martin Frank mentioned Slowik in a story. That's the Hakstol of Offensive Coordinators.
