I thought the story was very underwhelming but the animation was nice enough to be worth watching, so I was really relying on, or expecting, a good narrative.

Yeah the story is gonna fall flat. And the art style can only carry so much. No idea how the Japanese VAs are doing but there's not much crazy good things left in the plot.
