That doesn’t change the fact that his term and salary is a serious overpayment for what the value is now and going forward.

Why is it a serious overpayment? Who are the comps?
He was a free agent, they get 1 extra year, 1 extra million, so if you compare him to say RFAs who get extensions like TK, he's going to look overpaid.
TK gets $5.5M, he doesn't PK, doesn't play on PP1 and can't play center.

A lot of people don't like Hayes for aesthetic reasons, looks, style of play, but he's pretty much been as advertised when he was signed. He's in a scoring slump, but regression to the mean suggests it won't continue.

The past three seasons at ES:
Couts 2.65 pp/60, xGF/60: 2.71, xGFrel +4.51
Voracek 2.46 pp/60, xGF/60: 2.50, xGFrel -0.78
JVR 2.36 pp/60, xGF/60: 2.49, xGFrel +1.04
Giroux 2.34 pp/60, xGF/60: 2.65, xGFrel +2.90
TK 2.32 pp/60, xGF/60: 2.52, xGFrel +0.07
Hayes 2.03 pp/60, xGF/60: 2.59, xGFrel +3.24
Laughton 2.02 pp/60, xGF/60: 2.31, xGFrel -1.98

Picked up The Hockey News Future Watch today.

Ottawa top ranked team followed by NYR and LA. Flyers ranked 17th. Zegras leagues top prospect. York is ranked 32nd, Foerster #60. They assumed Frost was going to be in the NHL so was not ranked...similar to someone like Stutzle whereas Jason Robertson they expected was going to be going back to the AHL so have him as a prospect.

Our top 10:
York
Foerster
Zamula
Allison
Ratcliffe
Brink
Laczynski
Andrae
Ersson

He’s 6’6.

Not even counting goalies there’s definitely 10 other players I’d take before Ratcliffe at this point.

Going through the archives.

Hockey News listed Jackson Cates as one of the top 12 UFA college guys.

"Jack of all trades can bring some drive, work ethic, and details to the bottom 6. Low maintenance off the ice, highly engaged on it"

Best comparison is likely Brock Nelson in my own opinion.

Their 3 year averages for points, goals, assists are dead even last I checked. He’s paid 1.5mil less tho.

Even looking at their advanced metrics over that same 3 year span is very similar. Nelson beats out Hayes defensively (especially in High Danger areas) and Hayes beats out Nelson in terms of play driving. Their usage is eerily similar and more. The difference in Nelson beating out Hayes defensively compared to Hayes beating out Nelson offensively provides a bigger push since Nelson is close in terms of offense.

Very similar players, but they play different position typically. Only difference between the 2 seems to be that Hayes is a little bit bigger and way more expensive.

Nelson got 6x6, on an extension.
Lee got 7x7.
Nelson is 7 months older than Hayes, Lee is two years older.

Too bad all our shitty skaters that we draft don't end up like Robertson.

Foerster's skating looks fine, doesn't it?

And there's always Couturier, whose skating was supposedly so bad even in his 3rd pro season that he would never amount to anything.

im sorry, i know this is pretty much his fan club here, but a checking line center who cant skate, isnt that great on faceoffs, and doesnt provide a hint of offense? they are all over the place
