A promise of that was probably what he was promised to seal the signing.
The next Vecchione!

Just watched the bulk if the Pittsburgh game and was happy to see that Jeff Carter is still one of the best, fastest and biggest players on the ice, even at 35.
Remember suggestions a couple years ago that we sign Carter instead of Hayes, to fill the 2C gap? How smart would that have been, in retrospect? Carter would be the fastest player on the team, and light years better than Hayes at both ends of the ice. Oh well. Good move by Hexy to nab him for this year and next.
Bad signings can really hurt your team long term. $49M over 7 years for one good year of Hayes is proving to be not optimal.
You might be right, I don't remember that, and it would have required a trade too.I thought that Carter's assertion that he would retire instead of being traded was a major impediment, and not just to the Flyers.
Hextall and Hakstol getting fired and Holmgren retiring didn't change anything to your liking, but the inevitable next round of firings will surely solve everything.
I pretty much agree with your post. Fletcher could be salvageable if he checks into what Flyers hockey has been. It’s what sells in this city(hint for Scott). It also has produced winning seasons. A healthy Tim Kerr and Keenan would have had a SC win. Better defense and there could have been a cup in the Lindros years; decent goaltending and the Flyers take down the Blackhawks. It will solve everything if they don't suck at their jobs.
I actually think Fletcher is salvagable and surprisingly I think Flahr has done a good job so far. He was one of my bigger concerns when hired due to some of the picks he oversaw in Minnesota.
This coaching staff is not salvageable though. If Fletcher can figure that out and nail the next hiring, we are back in business.
What are your thoughts on this staff?

Continuing with charmin hockey like AV has been pushing will cost the franchise any chances of winning a SC and also it’s fan base.
Hayes AAV breaks down to paying him 7.5 when he’s 34 lolYou couldn't sign him, you had to trade for him, and 3yr/$17M last year at 35. Wouldn't have cost a lot, maybe a 2nd or 3rd.
Carter last few seasons:
2017-18, 12 ES points in 27 games. 2.00 pp/60, xGFrel +0.39
2018-19, 18 in 76 games, 0.98 pp/60, xGFrel -4.43
2019-20, 22 in 60 games, 1.61 pp/60, xGFrel -6.05
2020-21, 16 in 43 games, 1.70 pp/60 xGFrel +1.95
$5.27M cap hit through next season
He doesn't PK. His PP production was 1st group through 2017-18, now 2nd group level.
Carter is a 3C at this point with durability issues.
He's not as good as Hayes, he's probably not as good as Laughton at this point in his career.
He'd have been expensive depth.
Patrick scored at ES, 1.80, 1.71 PP/60 his first two years, while he's down to 0.85 this year, that's probably a combination of rust and puck luck.
Obviously there is a need to mend some of the deficiencies that come from the past. However this soft style of play of AV's has to go. The club has the potential of creating a good defense and a strong situation in goal with what is presently in the system. Its the skate around and not be hard on the puck that is a drag. It says it all when a rookie, Allison, shows up and plays competitive hockey and is noticeable in comparison with what else has been on the ice.Shitty goaltending and a lack of homegrown defence are part of traditional "Flyers" hockey. So if you want to go back to that brand of aways be in win mode hockey, that's cool but then you have to realize that the teams will consistently have bad goalies and expensive UFA defenses. Thats part of the brand.
That doesn’t change the fact that his term and salary is a serious overpayment for what the value is now and going forward.Hayes doesn't turn 34 until May, 2026.
So he'll be 33 his last season, probably playing wing.
By that point, the cap should be about 20% higher.

Jeff Carter won't retire, so what are the Kings' options with him?
Jeff Carter emphatically denied that he’s considering retirement, squashing a rumor from earlier in the season that if the Kings dealt him, he would call it quits.
But 5 years from now we will be great....right? Hopefully in 45 years when the Flyers win the SC, you will place flowers on our grave [ Rommy will be with me]2 years from being 2 years away was once a joke. Then it became reality.
Remember when G, Jake and JVR were supposed to be the vets to supply secondary scoring to the team led by great defense, goaltending, and TK, Couts, Patrick, Frost, Farabee, Lindblom leading the way up front.
Now those vets are our top 3 scorers, the defense can't play defense on most nights and the goaltending has been shit.
