I posted this on the leafs board

On February 9, 2016 the trade went as follows:

To Ottawa: Dion Phaneuf
Matt Frattin
Casey Bailey
Ryan Rupert
Cody Donaghey

To Toronto: Milan Michalek
Colin Greening
Jared Cowen
Tobias Lindberg
2nd round pick in 2017
No salary was retained by either team for over the trades entirety.
Phaneuf salary will be 7mil per until 20/21 season.

Who is winning this trade so far?

IMO the leafs won hands down for a few reasons
-they traded 5 contracts and received 4
-they saved on total salaries paid out
-they have Lindberg and a second pick (possibly)
-Michalek, Greening and Cowen salary come off the books at the end of the season.
Ottawa fans will point out that none of the players received are on the current roster but I'd rather have it that way then an overpaid 4/5 defenceman.

What do you think?

the leafs with dion are a playoff team though.....

...I know that the Leafs in the playoffs, at this point, is a thing of one more regular win, but have you seen Phaneuf numbers this season?!?!?!

And that's with significantly better goaltending.

This deal will become very good once Matthews, Nylander, Marner and al. have to be re-signed.

I mean if Dion was on the team one of Polak Hunwick or Marincin wouldn't be and believe me that would be a good thing.

Thst being said I can think of better uses for his 7 million

Yup, this right here.

I will say though how glad I am that we have our big 3 contracts staggered somewhat after management burned a year of Nylander's ELC last year - Matthews and Marner at the end of 2019, and Nylander at the end of 2018.

True, but in an ideal world, dion at ~4 million is a hell of a lot better than polak/hunwick

phaneuf has 4pts in 18 games, is a -8, and has horrible possesion stats.
7mil with a lot of term left. still amazed we got a decent prospect and a 2nd out of that. no one would give up a 2nd and prospect now without significant retention

They could add any one defensman and the Leafs aren't a playoff Team.

Good trade still.

I'd rather have Hunwick or Polak. For one, they get unnecessarily **** on all the time even though they are actually good defensemen. Secondly, even if they are bad, they expire after this year. Phaneuf goes until 20/21. I'd rather just start fresh on the bottom pair next year.

Its a win-win.

Ottawa was/is trying to win now. They had some bad deals in Michalek, Greening and Cowen. That 9M in ineffective players didnt help their 2015-16 and 2016-17 teams. So they made the trade to help their team for those years and possibly in years 3 and 4. They knew that the last 2-3 years could be bad but they would risk it to help their core now as they wanted to win.

Leafs were always going to lose this trade short term. The players they got back wouldnt help them and if they are lucky the 2nd and Lindberg might turn into something but their victory comes in year 3 and after when they have that 7M per for the last 4 years of the deal.

Ottawa gets what they want in years 1 to 4. Leafs get what they want in year 3 and beyond. Your classic sell from a bottom feeder to a team who wants to help their team win now.

So the leafs have no salary from that trade from next season on? If so, yeah, that's a win. They got the clean slate they needed.

Yeah, but that's a magical unicorns scenario.

I'm pretty certain that switching Martin Marincin for Duncan Keith would've meant one more win for the Leafs this season.
That would would make them a playoff team

As a Sens fan, I make that same trade all day every day. Scraps for a serviceable top 4 Dman. In terms of salary, it worked out to only costing something like 4.000 per season for Dion (once you subtract Cowen, Greening, etc..)

Why can't this just be a win for both teams? It really is/was.

Lol, what a dick thread. Wanting to gloat about a trade you think we won but they are very happy with. Ever heard that one about people who live in glass Houses? Maybe we should start a Kessel trade thread and look back on how goo that was. Poor form.

Defense is so hard to come by. If Dion was a Ufa at the end of the year, someone would pay him at least $5m

Surely you realize making a "Speculation: Phaneuf Trade" thread in the Trade board might be misleading? Especially when you're not really speculating anything just talking about how the Leafs won the previous trade.

Because it's not we got all that money dumped at seasons end that's going to give Toronto the money to do whatever they want come june and july

That Contract will end up being an anchor for budget a team
