A veteran (ufa end of season) to help the young defense and insert it into the 3rd defense pair.
A 3rd round 2026 or 4th should be a good price.
What do you think ?
Even though it looks like Albert Johansson may have just flat out, stolen Petry’s spot on the blue line, while he’s been injured, Petry will likely finish the season in Detroit, as their 7th Dman. Then call it quits sometime this summer.
He doesn’t cost them much after Pittsburgh and Montreal get done paying him every month, and he has trade protection. He also had promises from Detroit, he’d finish his contract with the team.
Chiarot is who’s likely going to end up with a fresh start somewhere else. Some say he almost ended up in Edmonton prior to the freeze in December, and may still end up there.
For all the garbage he takes on here, managers like him. As do hockey people. He can absolutely play an important role for any contender. You just don’t want to give him too much responsibility. That’s when he gets himself in trouble. He can’t be who you’re depending on to “carry the pairing.” He’s at his best as a high end role player in a Top 4. Exactly what he’s doing now, being Seider’s sidekick.
Chiarot’s role in Detroit has changed significantly under McLellan/Yawney, and he’s no longer being asked to “lead” the DCore, or has the ear of the coaching staff, like he did for the last 3 years. It’s part of the reason Boughner was fired along with Lalonde. The way they allowed Chiarot so much power over that DCore and decisions that were being made.
If people remember, one of the first comments we heard from McLellan after taking the job was him saying something like, “Having a letter on your jersey doesn’t equal playing time or how good you are.”
That was 100% directed at Ben Chiarot. They’ve given him some time to adjust and he’s played well, but there’s talk he’s not exactly happy with having to take a backseat, after being asked to do so much by the last coaching staff.
So a fresh start with a new team and a new role is probably best for both Chiarot and the Red Wings. He’d probably be a good fit in LA, as long as he knows his role going in.
