Petry goes home and joins talented, youthful squad. Can be a solid leader in the room and to grow the kids. Montreal gets a little younger with a very similar type defenseman, with possibly more speed to fit Gorton's style.

In 2022 and 2023 Montreal wants to own half of the picks in the first round of each draft. So they'll probably decline this.

Petry has an anchor for a contract, absolutely brutal. Also Detroit's LD are way thinner than the right side. Leddy is the only serviceable top 4 LD Detroit has. Yzerman blocks Gorton's number.

Not sure why Detroit would do it given how many years Petry has left. Add the Leddy is a UFA this summer, that would mean likely losing Petry for nothing but cap space the team does not really need.

What about something around Hronek instead of Leddy?

He's younger and would fit better in Habs' rebuild. Plus he's a RHD.

Wait wut? They do?

I’d take Petry on Detroit any day. Maybe not for Leddy but he’d be a good add in Detroit.

Are you sure about that? He has played terribly this year and is 34 years old. He might be closer to done than being a good add to anyone.

Not to mention 6.25 for 3 more years after this one.

A terrible half-season fully acknowledged, I still can't believe the level of disrespect Petry is getting this year over here.
But you also have to acknowledge you don’t trade a guy when he’s in the middle of his, “terrible half season”. And if you do pull the trigger, you need to fully expect a lousy return.

if the Habs actually want to trade Petry, Gallagher and Price this season, the Habs should expect to do very poorly in those trades.

big MEH from my point of view, wearing a habs hat. Just woudl liek to add that "can be a solid leader in the room and grow the kids" is not at all what they are reporting here in montreal; they are attributing his bad season to the stress of having to step up as leader or #1D and now even because of mental health issues becaue his wife and kids are in the US right now. Plus he came out and did a few in-game and post-game moves that got folks to question his leadership. That said, maybe he does ok if Detroit has a primary group of leaders

Weird if this comment came from Lebrun who is a regular on RDS and should know the situation.

BTW Petry’s wife left Montreal with their 3 kids to go back to the states because of Quebec Covid’s measures.

And he was in the Norris conversion last year.

He's almost certainly played injured all season as it just doesn't make sense for him to suddenly forget how to play hockey in the span of what, 3-4 months. Granted, that doesn't mean he has much value at the moment.

Montreal is not doing this. Jeff Petry is going to move either at the deadline or in the offseason for a price far in excess of the current HF consensus. I don't think very many NHL GMs are going to be too concerned that Petry went from a top pair D to completely washed between July and October 2021.

Don’t see why either team does this. Montreal loses Petry for less than half a season of Leddy when they should be trading him for futures and Detroit has no interest in a struggling defenseman who is 10 years older than their core.

I don't blame you for saying that. However, he hasn't slowed down physically. He still skates like the win. Problem is mostly confidence and playing on a bad team decimated by injuries.

Petry has negative value based on how his play has fallen off a cliff this season . Would be best for Habs to hang on to him and see if he rebounds next year .
Well, if you ignore all his history as a player and only look at this year, sure he has negative value.
Otherwise, I think his value is probably at the lowest right now and agree we should wait the summer or next year to maximize the return.
He's a player I'd be confident betting on to have a bounce back season.
