There's no reasonable explanation for Darling other than he f***ed up. He was a lazy sack of shit, and isn't being punished for pissing away an entire season while making millions of dollars. If he had come into camp in shape, and ready and then just had a bad season, that's another story, but that's not THIS story. Personally, I think he should have been shitcanned to the moon, but I'm not the GM or the owner. Alas, what can you do. He get's his second chance. It's pro sports, not the corporate world. He better thank his lucky f***ing stars for that.

Sorry, still a little bitter about Darling.

Well I wouldn’t say he isn’t being punished. He can’t possibly read anything anywhere about the Canes without seeing his name drug through the dirt. I certainly hope he doesn’t read fb or here.

The organization has publicly said he showed up fat and unprepared, has said the goaltending was the reason we aren’t better, has said we’re desperately looking for better goalies and he has to know Ward was let go because we couldn’t get rid of his big contract without causing ourselves even more pain.

While it doesn’t hurt his wallet, it’s hard to imagine he lacks pride. No one has ever said he’s anything but a good guy. A good guy would be humiliated to an extreme level. That’s a form of punishment in my eyes. His own team is acting like they’re stuck with him, which they are and he knows it.

Waddell said something along the lines of, Darling has a “new approach in his game and in his personal life”.

I think we all know what that means, and while I want to believe the best about Darling as a person, it’s kind of hard to take Don’s word on this one.

Did he block his sister?

Obviously professional athletes are held to a higher standard on this stuff, and they should be, but I've known people that have gained weight because of issues in their lives, and not just because they were lazy, bad people. He may just be a jerk that was happy to cash in big one time. I'm not discounting that as a possibility. None of us knows for sure. I just don't think him being a lazy, bad person is the only explanation. At least he seems to be trying to correct the issue.

it's actually free, but you have to marry yourself to the game

He's probably not a bad person, was probably dealing with issues. I'm not a complete ass hole, and understand that he's being punished in a sense. My point was he gets to keep his job, which I think is ridiculous, but I understand it comes down to several factors. Hey, if I ever go through something that would cause the type of meltdown he had, in my personal and professional life I'm sure I'll welcome a second chance too. In our case, we're 9 seasons without a playoff appearance, and his meltdown after signing a gigantic contract, was terrible f***ing timing, and I'm still mad at him.

I will bet up to 2 (two) people here $20 (twenty dollars) that the Carolina Hurricanes have a higher team save percentage this coming season than they did last year.
On the one hand, hey, it can't get any worse, right? On the other hand, it can actually get 0.8 something worse. And it is "where's lunch" Darling and "bi-polar" Mrazek, so....

....I won't take that bet. But I should.

I think it’s pretty apparent he’s not a “bad” guy. You can usually just tell an awful person when you see/meet one, and he’s never given me that vibe at all.

For me it’s more that he seems to be dealing with issues that are beyond professionalism and more into the realm of core psychological fitness. Of course we all hope he conquers his demons and has a great bounceback. But I’m sure every one of us has dealt with people who are “taking a new approach professionally and personally”. It’s one of those things where you don’t stake your heart and soul on a happy ending.

I’d take that, except that Darling was such a statistical outlier that it almost seems impossible to replicate. Almost any given goalie could just derp himself into a better stat line. The odds favor more pucks hitting him based purely on random luck.

But I wonder, would you bet against the Canes having a bottom-5 save percentage?

Some people are at the end of their rope and I can't blame them.

That’s pretty much where I am. It’s just visceral anger at the organization at this point. JR sold us on 3 solid years of futile playoff pushes even after the last group was beyond saving, then Francis sold us on 5 years of patience to build up a contender. Here we are and what do we have to show for it? Glaring holes in the two most important positions, a team that looks like it could eventually compete for a playoff spot but doesn’t look like it has anywhere near the fundamentals to compete for a Cup. This makes me angry. Angry at JR, angry at Francis, angry at Waddell, angry at Karmanos, angry at Dundon. There’s nothing else left to feel. If you really want a completely rational response, it would be “Screw this, I’m going to be a Leafs fan for a while. See you guys after the next 5 year plan.” The fact that I still have it in me to even engage with this organization enough to get mad at them is probably a sign of some sort of cognitive impairment on my part.

I’d give it even odds. The chances of one of Mrazek/Darling bouncing back, plus the fact that sv% just kinda works that way.

The point of my post, however, is that we are getting doom and gloom and throwaway the season and here comes Jack Hughes. But you just admitted the team save percentage will likely be higher, and even as terrible as it was last year we were in a playoff spot later into last season than we’d been in several years.

Now we’ve gotten demonstrably better at forward and defense (at least on paper), and yet the general feeling is that the team will be worse despite the save percentage probably being better (because it can’t likely get any worse)?

I’m not saying we can’t finish worse this year than we did last year - it’s hockey and anything can happen. But I don’t think that the event of this offseason suggest that conclusion.

imagine this board if mrazek becomes top 15 goalie in the league... i mean, he's really talented and really young for goalie.
We'd be overjoyed, and probably still wondering why Darling's getting so many starts. Being as long as we have with no real hope, to finally see some light at the end of the tunnel, and have that taken away creates one hell of a bipolar fanbase and I'll be the first to admit I'm pretty f***ing deep in to that end of things right now.
