Peterborough Petes 2024 25 Season Thread Part Ii

It’s gotta be a first round nhl talent has to be. Whoever they draft 2nd overall should come in and be a top 3 player on this team immediately
No question about that. Think about it, Ilya Protas was drafted 3rd overall in the Import draft and we are 1 pick higher than that. The import draft is a free/opportunity to add extra elite level talent

LOL. Davies was bending over backwards to defend this staff not that long ago and he's basically doing the same again now buying them time once more.

Here's the new article, hardly holding anyone's feet to the fire for basically no development the past two seasons. If anything he talks up the coach and GM and dumps on the players, not the way I view things.

If we suck again next year it is not on the players. They competed all season except for the final 2 weeks.
Our style of play is boring and it limits skilled players. I do enjoy that we play relatively physical though.

Sorry for my long post.......

You are definitely entitled to your opinion and you have been clear about your feelings toward Oke and especially Wilson even during the championship season. To be fair they struggled with chemistry after the mid-year changes that year but Wilson got them to buy in and they got to the top of the mountain.

You feel that it is Wilson’s fault that the 2007 1st rounders haven’t developed the way you would expect first rounders to. Most people would agree that it has been disappointing…..you would expect Addy, Taylor, Young and even Cameron to have better numbers in their draft year. (in the NHL central scouting recent NA skater rankings…...Cameron is 87, Taylor is 113 and Young is 183)

We have to be realistic though…….how many teams have ever had four 1st rounders from the same draft on their roster in their sophomore year?
I’m going to guess none!

In a regular situation 1st rounders in their draft year are surrounded by veteran players; many who are high quality players that support/insulate the younger player and help his development. This season these guys were expected to be go to guys on this team on a young, thin roster. Wilson could have played a more open style with this roster in order to create more offense but IMO it would have resulted in more blowout losses that could have scarred these guys. Instead, he focused on a trapping/clog-things-up style to try and keep games close. After a horrible start they went 14-14 through the middle of the season. This group of players battled hard despite their slim chances of making the playoffs. Was it a struggle for this team and definitely these 2007 guys?…….without a doubt.

Now it’s time to improve the offense heading into this season as a springboard to the 2026-2027 season. They will need to make trades, draft (OHL & Import) and attract players (maybe Gavin Lock comes to camp) and create a roster of players that will have chemistry that results in better offense.

I’m sure they have made it clear to all players (especially Taylor and Addy) what the expectation will be at camp in September. “Are you in or in the way?”

Let’s not forget the trade that Oke made in August 2022…….Sam Alfano (2004) + a 2nd and a 3rd round pick for Connor Lockhart(2003). Alfano (drafted #23 overall) was not selected in the NHL draft two months before the trade. Maybe Oke can make a similar deal this summer…..pick up a 2006 forward that is offensively gifted and likely to stick around for an OA year.

Does it really matter how badly these last two seasons were if the Petes are playing in an OHL final in 2026-2027?
No matter what happens I'm excited about these next few seasons - 3 solid young goalies, Ula and Cameron anchoring the defense, Novotny + a new import arriving and the development of Peterborough's own Colin Fitzgerald.

I think Mike is a little too close to the organization to be unbiased. It would be hard not to be. But I still think we're lucky to have him and his coverage of the team, because I'm not sure if any other OHL teams still have a beat writer.

Jim Parker at the Windsor Star, Josh Brown at the Kitchener-Waterloo Record and Ryan Pyette (a former Junior B player himself) at the London Free Press also do great work.

I still think it’s gotta be Kaden McGregor or Jakko Wycisk. Get another elite young centre and let Fitzy and this new young gun drive there own lines.

Some names I have my eyes on for round 2 & 3…

Kunopaski is impressive. The perfect typical Pete’s physical defender. Great fit.

Big thanks to @SarniaStingFan for upgrading the list of possible OAs for next year.
It is tough to anticipate what the OA landscape will look like come September with the NCAA schools attracting players but the Petes will be in the market for an upgrade IMO.

Further clouding the situation is the fact that the Petes will be competing with these teams in the OA market:

London (has only 1 OA back)
Guelph (has only 1 OA back)
North Bay (has only 1 OA back)
Owen Sound (has 2 OAs back)
Brantford (will likely upgrade OAs)
Kitchener (will likely upgrade OAs)

Kingston has extra OAs and needs picks.

Kingston OAs that might fit with the Petes…...
LW Ethan Miedema (unsigned Buffalo draft pick) 6’ 4” 212 lbs
57 pts in 66 g

RW Matthew Soto 6’ 0” 185 lbs
34 pts in 58 g

C Ethan Hay (unsigned Tampa Bay draft pick) 6’ 1” 195 lbs
18 pts in 30 g with Kingston

RD Will Bishop
17 pts in 62 g……..6’6” 209 lbs

LD Maleek McGowan
30 pts in 56 g……..6’0” 190 lbs

Erie isn't bad for picks but could use some in 2027 and 2028
Here are the OAs they have that the Petes could be interested in:

C Carey Terrance (unsigned Anaheim draft pick) 6’1” 187lbs
39 pts in 45 g

LW/RW Dylan Edwards 5’8” 170lbs
56 pts in 66 g

LD Alexis Daviault 6’0” 185lbs
36 pts in 64 g…...-27

RD Nathan Sauder 6’1” 201lbs
9 pts in 67 g……..+27
Sudbury needs picks in 2026, 2027 and 2028
Two forwards that could be Petes' targets:

RW Chase Coughlan 5’ 11” 194 lbs
43 pts in 65 g

C/RW Alex Pharand (unsigned Chicago Blackhawks draft pick) 6’ 3” 192 lbs
59 pts in 65 g

Niagara doesn't need picks but it's hard to know how players are feeling and what management will do.

If it's possible, I'd like this guy:

C/LW Alex Assadourian 5’ 10” 172 lbs
32 pts in 38 g

Young-Fitzgerald-Soto
Novotny-McGregor-McCallum

I would absolutely love to add Carey Terrance or Matthew Soto. If either of those two players are actually legit possibilities for this team then we need to find a way to add one of them. Carey Terrance especially to me would be a top tier addition and would really increase the offensive potential of this team.

We’ve made our fair share of deals with Erie the last few seasons… Lockhart and Sproule

I'd be surprised of OKE considered Miedema for a OA spot in all honesty.
Although a solid skill option the leadership qualities are not really there.
Uens is going to likely be skilled out of a spot on Kingston and is a locker room / glue guy that I could see going to Peterborough.
If he doesn't stay somewhat local he will be playing JR C in Napanee.

Good point @ScoutLife4 ,
Character is something that Oke seems to value, especially when making OA/19yo trades.
Daniel Nikandrov from Sarnia from a few years back is a good example of a great player/leader OA.
He also dealt for a number of 19yo "character guys" who ended up playing as OAs and were good leaders for the Petes......
Alex Black and Nikita Korostelev from Sarnia
Brandon Prophet came from Barrie as a 19yo and was captain for the Petes the next season
Austin Osmanski from the Steelheads

When he is looking at any of these OA possibilities, character is a must IMO

100% agree.
Uens also plays a style that Wilson and Staff love.
I can't really think of a better fit for Uens and the Petes mutually.
Do you guys think they bring back Matejicek and use up 2 spots? also assuming Jenkin wont be back.

I’ve never seen a conditional pick in a deal involving just picks what could possibly be the condition lol
Not a clue but I'll take a stab at it..........Maybe the earlier 3rd pick is 50th overall and so the conditional 15th round pick is improved to a 10th if the future 3rd round pick is 55th or worse? Something like that maybe.

Also, I have no idea when or how the Petes got Erie's 3rd in 2025 to trade to Sarnia?
I checked the draft pick database and it's listed under Erie........doesn't make any sense.
Anyone have any idea?

Alfano OA season?
Was there a conditional pick attached to that?
