Regardless of problems with the team's core, leadership, drop-offs in individual performance(s), etc, doesn't it seem like a firing of Laviolette (and staff) is imminent?

Based on the same team-wide flaws in execution like failures to defend man-to-man, poor and/or late reads leading to copious odd-man rushes, etc. Fundamentals that shouldn't be an issue. And based on the team's downward trajectory. The team has been generally performing worse over the season, and even during the losing stretch, it seems like they're trending even further downward.

Yes, there are players on the roster that the team might be better off trading, and yes improved performance, if any, may be brief with a new coach. But it seems most likely that the coaching staff is the first domino to fall. If the Rangers attempt to salvage their season, they need to start now -- never mind whether they should or not, they might try -- and if the Rangers do begin a "retool" or "rebuild" phase, it starts a little later, maybe closer the trade deadline and continues in the offseason. I think it's reasonable to assume the coaching staff wouldn't be present for that process, and would be gone before that gets underway.

This is a familiar cycle for these Rangers to be going through, that is true, and it's also a familiar cycle for Peter Laviolette in his long career. I like Laviolette, but the Rangers need to change, and historically, the coaching staff changing is the first step, even if it's not the last step.
This is a lucid post.

I tend to side with the "Not firing another coach for these lifeless, heartless, chumps"

But a coach is easy to fire right? Aren't we still paying AV, Quinn & Gallant?

Add Lavi to the list, bring in someone else & you still have the HUGE issues of Miller, Lindgren, Kreider and most flagrantly, Mika who basically can't be traded without paying for it severely (1st rd picks & retention etc)

Drury is in a HUGE corner & I don't know what he can do other than BLOW the team up so badly that he'll get fired, but he'll put us in a spot where we might be able to rebuild correctly & be decent again in like 5 or 6 yrs.

Drury can leave first, I don't want him touching this team anymore. Then the new gm decides on a coach, moves Kreider, lindgren, Smith and hopefully Zibanejad. Gotta end this madness now

I'd be more than fine with that.

Especially the "end this madness now" portion.

Not sure how much worse it can get after being booed of your own ice, during the holidays, last night then tonight's debacle that wasn't even close to the 3-2 score.

I want him behind the bench. He's doing a perfectly good job at ensuring this team stays losing and this organization needs a reset.

Anything that even provides a sliver of hope that we are a contender would be a death blow to this franchise.

Keep Lavi, keep losing. Punt the season, get a top 10 pick that we'll undoubtedly f*** up, and then fire his ass at the end of the year.

He's not getting fired because Dolan isnt paying 3 coaches in a non-playoff season. Step in the right direction with the Zibanejad ice time and Kakko scratch (he is slow as shit). Cuylle with less ice than Kreider remains egregious. Drury needs to get him help on defense before the Christmas roster freeze, which I would be treating a as a mini trade deadline.

this thread is gonna be fun to look back on when we lift the cup with Lavi this year :D
Would that be the "Regular Season Championship Trophy for None Playoff Teams"?

I don't like much, if anything, of what Laviolette is doing. I still would rather keep him until we can get rid of most of this rotting core.

The radio guys were speechless that Kreider was out there at the end in place of Cuylle

Last year was nice and all, but this guy just wasn’t it.

Abandoned his early season system maybe 15 games in and then got aggressively out coached in the playoffs. This year’s been a full on display of the things that got him shitcanned in Nashville and sent packing in Washington.

I think I’d fire him and see if we can squeeze some interim coach magic out for the rest of the year before overhauling the team in the summer, but this organization doesn’t fire coaches mid season for some inexplicable reason.

Can a coach negotiate a no-termination clause into their contract?
They already have a no-termination clause.

If they get terminated, they are due money.
Usually coaches are "relieved of their duties." Which means they are still on payroll, but no longer have responsibilities. If they want to pursue other employment, they usually still need approval from their team, and if they do accept, they may forfeit their pay from their previous team by mutually terminating.

If he gets fired he deserves to get payed out.
This isn't his fault.

If that were the case he shouldn't have extended Sherterskin

Never seen a coach lose a team to this degree, this quickly. Stunning.
The coach didn't lose the team (at least, that isn't explaining most of what we're seeing). The GM lost the team. Everyone in the locker room is pissed at Drury.

(That being said, I'm not opposed to Lavi being let go and Peca being given the reigns, so long as Drury is also fired).

One thing I did not understand. In a pivotal game, Cuylle Chytil Berard playing well. Why the hell would you rely on vets that has not done anything all game based on their salary? If this comes from Drury, he must be fired. Most coaches play the players playing well and or sometimes play the players to get them out of a funk. This ain’t a funk, it’s a downside of their career. 3-2 why not keep playing Cuylle Chytil and Berard. Maybe they would have tied the game. Makes no sense to me at all. Rangers suck at pro scouting and running an organization. Nothing will change until Dolan sells the team.
