Damn this was unexpected.

Now put him in Cooperstown.
Pete Rose knew what he was doing when he broke the cardinal rule of the sport, spent almost two decades lying about it, and then changed his tune for his own self-aggrandizement. He was a stain on the face of professional sports and a sorry excuse for a human being. No plaque for Rose, ever.

I dont condone what he did but he is one of the best players ever, he deserves to be in the hall.

The plaque is an honor, and Rose is not the sort of person we should be honoring.

There are people with plaques we should not be honoring either, but we don't need to compound those errors by making another one.

Rose's accomplishments on the field are rightly recognized in the museum itself. But he should not receive the honor of the plaque.

There’s been very little indication that he truly was ever remorseful or understood his transgressions. Think HBO did a documentary that supports that.

The man went to Cooperstown every induction week to sign memorabilia for money. Of course he wasn't remorseful - he was one of the most disgustingly arrogant and self-aggrandizing people in the history of the sport.

It's disgusting baseball, as an industry, has been as tolerant and lenient of Rose as it has been over the last 35 years. The All Century Team, recognition at official games, journalists writing puff pieces about him, when what he deserved was complete persona non grata status.

Condolences to his family and fans, but he broke the one red line ban item (and then lied about it for decades) and was rightfully banned over it. Should be kept out of Cooperstown permanently.
I used to be of this mindset, then I read that both Ty Cobb and tris Speaker were suspended for a time due to gambling implications and conspiracy to throw a game. Both were re-instated and enshrined in the hall. I'm ok with Rose going in if there's proof that he didn't bet on the Reds

Problem is that you can't prove a negative, so there'll never be proof that he never bet against the Reds.

But what we do know is that he did bet on games, so from that (and the blanket ban on betting) it's not too hard to imagine that he managed games differently depending on if he had money riding on games or not, possibly to the detriment of the team in games he didn't bet on.

Cobb definitely represents an interesting comparison, but his lesson was that fighting it early rather than just denying for decades is probably the path to getting over stuff like that.

not the best human being by all accounts, but no denying he was one hell of a ballplayer who laid it all out on the field for his team every night. an all time great hitter and competitor

You can separate the player from the person. I guess well have to agree to disagree tho, plenty of shady people in Cooperstown and Rose wouldn't even be the "worst" person in there.

I don't like what he did, no one should. That being said, he's right when he says that Ohtani was basically off the hook because of his interpreter. And all of the gambling in our face today in sports is just sickening. Rose did wrong, but man oh man was he ever born at the wrong time. They embrace gambling now. Not among the players, but still.

From his on-field play, he should be in there. Look, the guy is dead, and perhaps he wasn't the nicest guy but Baseball keeps shooting themselves in the foot here. All of the great players who took roids aren't in, Rose isn't in either. There are a lot of greats not in there. How do you tell the story of baseball without Pete Rose?
