There are also the unintended consequences of adding more padding — as we’ve seen with shin guards and visors, players throw themselves even more recklessly into danger when they feel protected from any dangerous outcome. It used to be that almost nobody in the league would stick their face in front of a slapshot like this. Even in this replay, his hands are at his waist trying to play goalie instead of up covering his exposed neck and face. It’s kind of crazy how little self-preservation these guys practice, and a lot of that it dependence on padding to take care of everything.

You aren't wrong in a general sense, but I want to emphasize this particular case was at the blue line and he's close to the shooter. That shot is going nowhere near the net. Nobody could reasonably expect a puck so high. It's also definitely not a slapshot.

I wonder what happened there.

I had/have SVT, which is an abnormal heart rythym issue, that I ended up having surgery for.

Before the surgery, when I would get a sudden burst in my heart rate, one solution they tell you is to rub the side of your neck, where your carotid artery is, to try and slow the increased rate.

I wonder if the shot hit that area, causing some sort of swelling around the artery or something, causing him to feel weak from a lowered heart rate.

Glad he is doing ok.

So are the ones who are heavily against it. I just don't get it. It wont make any difference on a situation like this but the cut protection is a no brainer to have.

Fan opinions on the issue don't really mean much. It's up to the players to decide. I know it's trendy to push them whenever some freak accident happens but they still occur very rarely.

I have never crashed my car but I still wear a seatbelt. It doesn't matter if its the players or the fans who's against it, it still makes zero sense to me.

I'm guessing the neck guard is a bit more uncomfortable than wearing a seat belt, but each person can make that decision themselves. We've still got like 6 players who choose not to wear a visor on their helmets despite knowing the risks, and I bet there would be even more if it wasn't mandated.

Regardless, we don't need to turn this thread into a debate on neck guards since they likely wouldn't have made a difference in this case.

Time to make neck guards mandatory!
A neck guard only protects against getting cut by a skate. It has no value as a blunt force shield which is what happens when you get hit by a 90mph piece of vulcanized rubber.

Yes, this occurred because of larger shin pads and not because of the evolution of the game and guys whipping pucks around at 80+ mph instead of sliding it along the ice.

Dude below posted a solid breakdown.

This guy here made an interesting analysis of this injury, doctor POV

As a goalie with a D3O containing neck guard, this is not entirely accurate. It’s not perfect (I still wear a plastic dangler), but I’ve had shots on the collar/neck with and without and it definitely helps.

Glad he seems to be doing ok. Very scary.

They didn’t call the game when Kane got his wrist torn open or when jiri Fischer and Jay bouwmeester went down. They won’t for this.

I’m against not it though. It was scary
For the Bouwmeester incident, then didn't call the game, but they postponed the game that was finished a couple months later

I'm not going to get into the need for them to protect them from skates cuts, I understand, though disagree, the argument. But arguing they need it when the player gets hit by the puck as if it would've have protected them is laughable.

Well, the quality and the design of neck guards can be improved upon.
Also having a neck guard would have helped a bit in this case absorbing the shock from a deflected puck.
It would also help in you throat area not bleeding when hit by a puck.
