This maybe constricted an artery? It would explain the delayed reaction. Also, why wouldn't padding help with this? I get that blunt force trauma is different than a slice but some padding absorbing and spreading the force would be useful.

Even in this replay, his hands are at his waist trying to play goalie instead of up covering his exposed neck and face. It’s kind of crazy how little self-preservation these guys practice, and a lot of that it dependence on padding to take care of everything.

Lundqvist once took a puck to the neck whilst saving a shot. Although he did finish the game, he had lasting effects the days after and it was determined that he had a sprained blood vessel in his neck and he went on LTIR for 6 weeks.

It looks like Holloway may have something similar.

You aren't wrong in a general sense, but I want to emphasize this particular case was at the blue line and he's close to the shooter. That shot is going nowhere near the net. Nobody could reasonably expect a puck so high. It's also definitely not a slapshot.

I wonder what happened there.

I had/have SVT, which is an abnormal heart rythym issue, that I ended up having surgery for.

Before the surgery, when I would get a sudden burst in my heart rate, one solution they tell you is to rub the side of your neck, where your carotid artery is, to try and slow the increased rate.

I wonder if the shot hit that area, causing some sort of swelling around the artery or something, causing him to feel weak from a lowered heart rate.

Glad he is doing ok.

Fan opinions on the issue don't really mean much. It's up to the players to decide. I know it's trendy to push them whenever some freak accident happens but they still occur very rarely.

I'm guessing the neck guard is a bit more uncomfortable than wearing a seat belt, but each person can make that decision themselves. We've still got like 6 players who choose not to wear a visor on their helmets despite knowing the risks, and I bet there would be even more if it wasn't mandated.

Regardless, we don't need to turn this thread into a debate on neck guards since they likely wouldn't have made a difference in this case.

A neck guard only protects against getting cut by a skate. It has no value as a blunt force shield which is what happens when you get hit by a 90mph piece of vulcanized rubber.

Yes, this occurred because of larger shin pads and not because of the evolution of the game and guys whipping pucks around at 80+ mph instead of sliding it along the ice.
