Not sure if you’ve ever worn a neck guard before, but most of them are mesh designed solely to perfect from a cut from a blade. A blunt force won’t be stopped from a neck guard.

This maybe constricted an artery? It would explain the delayed reaction. Also, why wouldn't padding help with this? I get that blunt force trauma is different than a slice but some padding absorbing and spreading the force would be useful.
