I would rather call, name them Utah something, Salt Lake something sounds, no offence, stupid/weird. - that soccer team is prove of that.

I mean, Denver Avalanche?... that would have sounded super weird.
There's a reason why Utah Jazz exists.

This take is going to age like milk.
Like I said, it's an odd take so I'm ok with that but for crissake, it's the fuggin YOTES, they've defied all the rules of reality, physics, gravity and multiverses since jump. Anything one has ever said is impossible, that's silly or would never happen, the Yotes keep saying 'Hold my beer'.

Salt Lake City's metro population is about 1.25 million. It has about the same population as metro Memphis and Buffalo.
According to the 2023 census, it's actually 1.19 million but let's not quibble. That's an incredibly tiny population for a metro area. Hockey works (kinda) in Buffalo because it's basically Canada-lite in weather and love for hockey, with a long NHL tradition. Salt Lake City will work for the NHL about as well as Memphis would, yes, meaning not at effing all. But of course, as long as the owners get that sweet, sweet cash, who gives a rat's ass...

I feel so bad for the true die hard Coyotes fans. Hartford had a die hard core, as did Kansas City, Cleveland, Quebec City, and Atlanta, but nobody has ridden the rollercoaster from hell like the fans in Arizona. They deserved so much better.
Did KC have a "die hard core" fanbase? They only existed for like two seasons.

i don't understand why you'd force the coyotes to move because they play in an embarrassing building only to put them in what would still be the most embarrassing building in the nhl? at least move them to somewhere with an nhl ready building like kansas

WHERE'S an NHL Ownership group in Kansas City and/or a lease w/ an arena in Kansas City..... even Kansas City has issues keeping the Chiefs/Royals in Missouri

So are Bettman and Daley in line for a big bonus if the owners get a billion or so in this sale? Neither should get a DIME, especially from the profitable teams (yes I mean TML) for continuing to prop up this pathetic excuse for a franchise.

MSA (metropolitan statistical area) estimate is 1,267,864 for 2023. You may be looking at urban area population rather than metropolitan statistical area population.

CSA (combined statistical area) estimate is 2,805,734 for 2023.

It's less embarrassing and more profitable.

Utah has already put $900mil up for a new hockey arena, and a separate $900mil for a baseball arena. The big plan is to host the winter Olympics and have those single use facilities eventually have tenants long-term. (The baseball stadium would be for skiing events). This is a city who is putting 1.8 BILLION dollars towards WINTER sports. Maybe we aren't putting enough respect on this market for their potential to thrive if they are willing to do something like that. No other city would.

move them to Canada
Canadians need to let go of this fantasy. Hopefully Quebec City will get a team again someday. It just won't be this one.

Winnipeg's heartburn the past couple of years will probably push the Nordiques outcome even further into the future.

It only sounds weird because it's what you are used to. No one bats an eye about the Denver Nuggets or the Denver Bronco's. Just like people would find it weird if the Leafs were all of a sudden the Ontario Maple Leafs or the Red Wings were the Michigan Red Wings. Like, no one finds the Phoenix Suns strange despite every other team in the metro going by Arizona.

Move 'em. This saga has gone on long enough. Coyotes have never turned a profit in their years in Arizona. Should have been taken care of long ago imo.
They’ve actually been profitable the last few seasons

All you're doing is phrasing the want differently. If people are wanting the team to move, then they also want the fans to lose their team. There really is no difference.

And I know the saga well and know that it's been going on for almost 15 years now. It still doesn't answer the question as to why anyone would want the team to move. It has had, and would continue to have, no effect on their team or their love for the sport. Seems like a no-brainer to root for the fans to keep their franchise.
At the end of the day, you can't say that the NHL didn't do everything in their power to keep the franchise in Arizona. The NHL strongly covets the Arizona market and its potential fanbase

I mean, Real Salt Lake is cringy as hell, but that's because they are using non-English terms for a random MLS team in Salt Lake City. It translates to Royal Salt Lake City. I don't think it's must worse than Dynamo Houston or Inter Miami.

Is there even a market for hockey in Salt Lake City?

P.S. What happens to the threads where Matthews was apparently going home? :naughty:

Yes.

But i'd still say, its better to go with Utah something, instead of going with Salt Lake something.

It also sells better, the name, because of Utah Jazz
