It appears Steve Mason will be tending goal elsewhere for the 2017-18 season.

The Flyers apparently aren't interested in re-signing the former Calder Trophy winner, his agent Anton Thun told Sam Carchidi of The Philadelphia Inquirer.

"In all honesty, he would have hoped the Flyers would have been interested enough to enter into contract negotiations with him right now, but they didn’t, so you move on," Thun said. "That’s business."

I refuse to believe the Flyers didn't even make an offer.
Did his agent tell the Flyers if you aren't offering X amount of years don't bother?
want to hear more than just an agents side in this.

I'm still hoping that this is a scheme to not have to protect him in the Expansion Draft... and that there is a wink-wink-poke-poke gentleman's agreement to settle on a Contract after the coast is clear.

... But the hope is fading quickly... and I'm now thinking that the Fleury acquisition rumor may actually become a reality with the Cap Space now being what it is, and the Team becoming more competitive.

Only time will tell.

My guess is Mason wanted a long term contract but the Flyers weren't interested in that, so it was a non-starter.

I won't miss him, to be completely honest. Last season just was too much inconsistency and too much drama.

Yeah, I know that the Mason narrative improved at the end of last year, but I still suspect the guy is a bit of a magnet for drama and trouble.

Not a bad guy and certainly not a bad goalie, but someone I'm happy to move on from.

What did Mason want? 4 years, $18m?

Stolarz is no guarantee. And even if Sandstrom and/or Hart develop nicely, they would just be breaking into the NHL during Mason's third and fourth year. And they would be on entry level or second contracts, so total goaltending salary wouldn't be that high. Seems like an ideal situation actually.

Or did he wants 5 or 6 years? I doubt it. Regardless, his attitude did not help the situation.

Hextall has to have a plan. He can't be going in with just thinking he will get his free agent. There has to be something brewing

Before people get too worked up, we have no idea what happened here.

One side of the story, and an agent at that, is not enough to jump to conclusions.

I'd like to think that there's a whole other facet to this saga, but I'm not getting my hopes up. Maybe counterintuitive is the way to go with this team: an underwhelming tandem like Neuvirth / Bernier, with Stolarz and Lyon ready at a moment's notice.

No, I'm not convincing myself either.

It was patently obvious that there wouldn't be any negotiations with Mason until after the ED, if they happened at all.

I wish they had extended Mason instead of Neuvirth, but I am intrigued with Bernier. SV% is not a team stat but I think Toronto was a bit of an exceptional circumstance in the last couple years of their extended tank. He's only a few months younger than Mason, but within the age range where he should be able to reach his peak performance (whatever that truly is) and I'm still a sucker for his pedigree. He's played under 14,000 career minutes compared to Mason's 26,000+. My worry is they will have to overpay based on honing in. He should not be able to command a very big number Philadelphia should be one of the most attractive landing spots for him.

Yawn.

I gave up on Mason when it became obvious he lacked the mental toughness to be a playoff goalie. He can give you a good month here and there, but when is your guess.

If they go with two low cost retreads it won't keep them from looking at their 24 and 25 year old AHL goalies who need to play NHL games and find out if:
a) they're starter material
b) backup material
c) it's been nice knowing you, good luck with your career

Is there anyone available that you'd trust in the 7th game of a semi-finals series?
