Firing Sullivan now and promoting from within changes nothing.

Firing Sullivan now and hiring from outside means at least a 3-year contract. Firing the replacement in May just a few months into the contract will sour a lot of quality candidates about the job.

Wait until the end of the season to clean house gives you the deepest and best candidate pool to find a good head coach who can actually create change.
You ALWAYS have a rationale to keep Sullivan around just that extra bit longer.

The end of the season will come around and there will suddenly be no good candidates to replace him, so you'll suggest it's better to wait until the NEXT season when hopefully more options become available.

In what year do you think this team will win their next playoff round?

No, I'm ready to move on at the end of the season. Time for new ideas. This off-season is the hard deadline for me. No moving it, unless they somehow rally to win the Cup.

There are a ton of quality candidates. The only issue is they all have jobs and won't be given permission to talk in season.

I've listed my top candidates before - Jeff Halpern (TB), Marco Sturm (LA), Jay Leach (SEA) - but there are a number of others who could end up impressing and being good fits.

If they change their style of play and find a way to make some difficult trades/signings this off-season, they can win their next playoff round next season.

I thought they had a decent approach to roster construction this year, but in looking around the league, I think it needs a lot more work. They need a more diverse top nine - more physicality, a net front presence, etc. - and a stronger defense. If you have Letang and Karlsson, you need a different mix next to them and in the bottom pair. Ludvig might be a start, but I'm still skeptical of him long-term.

I think Rakell, Smith, Pettersson and Graves should all be trade bait this summer. None of them are bad - even Graves. But I think you can move them for similar priced players who are a different style.

i know you're a leafs fan, so getting you to a double digit IQ would require you to borrow the brains of at least 100,000 other leafs fans, but let me help you out:

Dubas doesn't need a blame buffer. He was literally just hired. Everyone in Pittsburgh is smart enough to know what this team is and where it's going. We're not losers like the dipshits in Toronto who wouldn't know what a win is with a dictionary and a team of translators.

He'll fire Sullivan when it's time, he'll make trades when it's time, and he'll still win a cup in pittsburgh before Toronto.

I don't know why a city of losers constantly feels the need to tell others about success and how to be successful. You have no clue about either of those things, but I assure you that Pittsburgh is quite happy with Dubas.
there are times when i realize why i missed you  but it's not often.:eviltongu

If they intend to actually try and contend next year they need to work on acquiring playdriving wingers. Malkin desperately needs one. Smith ain't that. He might be fine as a third wheel, but someone needs to help Malkin push play on that line.

The bottom six needs to be entirely re-worked outside of Eller.

The coaching staff needs replaced.

Guentzel should probably be traded to get younger. It might mean a less productive winger, but grabbing picks + a good young forward might actually make that line better in both the short and the long run.

Ok, so we're in a different place on this. I'm resigned to them not winning a round until multiple years after the rebuild is deemed over. If I had to put a number on it, 2033? And that's only if the rebuild is done well.
I've given up on them winning rounds with this core. I'd like to see them fight for a playoff spot though, and make the product more entertaining. Sullivan and Reirden need to be dismissed for that to happen.

I was okay with his moves. The team's ninth defensively. They built it to improve in that area, for the most part. The PK got better.
The result there is a success, but that's only because the goalies have been really good. So really, they're a middling defensive team for me.
I'm also on board with adding more physicality, so long as it leads to useful things. Ludvig separates man from puck a lot, so I appreciate that part of his game. I'm not sold on his ability to track and position well for the long haul either though.

I'm not as down on Graves as the rest of the board. He's a +8, playing against top players. I think people exaggerate how much his play actually hurts the team, and anything he does on the positive end is completely ignored. He wins a lot of 50/50 situations with his size and reach...ones that prior D-men did not. His positioning is quite strong. He hangs around the danger area, instead of chasing ghosts. I don't have to worry about him being stuck behind the net on goals against a lot.
I think if he was truly as bad as people say here, like Jack Johnson level, then his goals against count would be much higher right now.
IMO it's way too early to give up on a guy in year 1 of a deal. He's still in his prime. If we can squeeze out a good level from him later on, he'll be a good trade chip, especially with the escalating cap.

I think there's a good chance Rakell and Smith bounce back, but age is a consideration here. Smith's the much better 5v5 player historically, so I'm more hopeful with him.

I seriously wonder if Dubas is considering an aggressive pursuit of Nylander if he hits free agency. Dubas and Nylander apparently have a strong working relationship. Such a move would mesh with Dubas' statement upon being hired that he wanted the transition period from the core to be as short as possible.

Would love that but feels like a pipe dream

I like Nylander but he’ll be aging out…28 years old and $10+M per year long term is not the move I would make…Dubas should be looking to try to sign RFAs, make offer sheets and bring in young players…

Pens don't have the draft capital to sign RFAs of note.

But they could trade Smith/Rakell/Pettersson/Graves to pick up some younger players And draft assets.

They need to trade everyone they can for assets, particularly Jake, and if they don’t get young players back, use the draft picks to sign and offer sheet RFAs…

Nice mod edits, lol
