I think it's okay if they can maintain 7th. If they keep winning and get up to like 9th or 10th or god forbid even higher then yeah that'd be pretty devastating.

7th overall isn't terrible though. Anaheim has two games in hand (same points as the Pens) and Boston has one point on the Pens and one game in hand.

Hopefully this is as high as the Pens climb.
I think it's a pretty outright disappointment to have a season like this one only to go on a heater in mid March and f*** up your shot at a significant prospect in a draft where everyone agrees it's a top 4 (maybe 5 with Frondell going on a tear at the end here) and then a steep drop in quality. /shrug

This f-ing over the team bit is kinda nonsense tbh.

There's no generational players in this draft so at the end of the day who the f cares if we pick 8th instead of 6th or whatever. It's not gonna make much of a difference long term for the team.

Now if Sid screws us out of McKenna or Dupont then F U SID (j/k). But yeah ultimately I don't think how the Pens finish this year matters a whole lot.
Well, that's a pretty easy question to answer by just looking at the 6th and 7th picks over the past few years vs the 8th:

2023 - Dmitry Simashev, Matvei Michkov - Ryan Leonard
2022 - David Jiricek, Kevin Korchinski - Marco Kasper
2021 - Simon Edvinsson, William Eklund - Brandt Clarke
2020 - Jamie Drysdale, Alexander Holtz - Jack Quinn
2019 - Moritz Seider, Dylan Cozens - Philip Broberg
2018 - Filip Zadina, Quinn Hughes - Adam Boqvist

If the Pens beat the Panthers and Boston loses again, we’re looking like we’ll be picking 8th in the draft…stop winning meaningless games!…for god sake, lose tonight!…

More or less proving my point. None of these guys are franchise changing players. Maybe Michkov? And the only reason he dropped was he's Russian.

That assumes top 5 was ever on the table. What evidence was there we were tanking our way that low? People thinking we will out tank the Flyers, Sharks, Hawks, Predators, or Sabres were being tremendously optimistic lol

I glossed over Quinn Hughes. Oops. But he's the only player of that caliber on the list.
Just go a bit further and see how totally silly your argument is:

Matthew Tkachuk
Clayton Keller
Ivan Provorov
Zach Werenski
Hampus Lindholm
Mika Zibanejad
Mark Scheifele
Jeff Skinner
Oliver Ekman Larsson
Nazem Kadri

Not all franchise players, but there are some serious studs in picks 6 and 7 over the past decade.

This team's been bottom 5 several different times this season and would continue to be so if they hadn't pulled a 5-1 run outta their asses at the worst possible time. Even going .500 over that stretch, they're 5th from last. /shrug

I dunno why you want to try and spin it. This shit sucks. Another miserable f***ing season and they're trying their damnedest to screw up any silver lining by making sure that instead of a guy like Hagens, Martone, Frondell, etc., that they'll end up drafting like 9th after all the notable names are gone in a draft unanimously considered to lack depth.

Again, this isn't a franchise cratering thing. It's much, much more important that this team finds their way into the running for McKenna and Dupont (even if it's at the expense of precious Sid's points chase or whatever). But a team like the Pens doesn't have the luxury of wasting opportunities to draft significant (albeit not franchise cornerstone) players.

Matthew Tkachuk and Quinn Hughes are the only franchise altering players in either of your lists.

There's good players there...sure. But you're generally going to need to get to the very top of the draft to build a cup winning core.

So wringing our hands over the chance that we miss out on a Tkachuk or a Hughes when those guys are quite rare at those slots anyways.....shrug.

If we cost ourselves a Kadri or a Jeff Skinner that isn't going to do shit to alter our trajectory.

Up until recently they were top five in the league in goals scored per game. It's strange hearing local media talk about Elvis like he's been ok this season. He's just been better than f***ing terrible. Not a high bar. If they had even average goaltending they'd be in the playoffs. However, their wheels have fallen off and the last few games have been an abject failure. Tonight looking like another shitshow in Columbus, but at least it's my favorite team this time!
It was always odd to me that they didn't even go and make a move for a goalie at the deadline, because while Tarasov might have potential to be the future starter, he isn't ready and hasn't been for a while.

Jackets are missing Monahan and that's a huge piece to a team like CBJ, they're also set to get back Gudbranson who has missed basically all of this season so far except for a couple of games. But Monahan, he was having a very good year before he got hurt in early January. Without Monahan they're 13-12-3, scoring 2.82 Goals per game and allowing 2.89 Goals per. Not to say they were some insane team with him too but their goal scoring was definitely up, but they were also allowing more than they scored (they were 18-17-6, scoing at 3.37 and allowing 3.61).

I think the funniest thing is even after the 4 Nations games, the Penguins are still absolute trash defensively, allowing 4 goals per game and scoring 3.29, which is a slight uptick during the last 14-15 games - their season average is 2.94 Goals For, 3.55 Goals Against.

But the narrative right now is the usual "WE WENT ON A RUN AT THE END..." yeah, like last time and still had jack shit to show for it, except this time they're f***ing themselves out of a top 5 pick.
