Yeah there's no way this team is getting a Lekkerimaki caliber prospect for Guentzel. The only time prospects like that are traded are for cost-controlled players. If Guentzel was coming with an extension, then I'd be expecting a Lekkerimaki caliber piece back.

The headliner of a rental Guentzel trade is going to be someone like Samoskevich or Nadeau, not Lekkerimaki.
I don't get why a 15th overall pick is such a ridiculous ask. If the choice is Guentzel walks for nothing or we take the likes of Hoglander and Mikheyev, then I'd rather just let Jake walk and have the free cap space in the summer.

Jake would be a Canuck already if this was in play IMO. That is probably too rich to expect.
I'm still not convinced this team's conceded that the season's over tbh. There's a nonzero chance they genuinely believe Jake's return is their TDL rental, and he'll spark a run to the playoffs.

Also, I think they were probably waiting to see how the Pettersson extension worked out so they had a better idea of how Jake may fit into the cap structure moving forward. /shrug

I don't think anybody's gonna trade for Jake as a pure rental. That's why I don't expect him to end up in Edmonton or Vegas, cuz neither team can re-sign him, nor do I think they have the prospects/young players to be worthwhile to Dubas.

I’d much rather have Podkolzin and Hoglander over Lekkerimaki tbh.

What's cap space matter? The FA crop is dogshit outside of Reinhart and Jake tbh, and why would Reinhart sign a huge extension with a team that's been dead in the water for years?

Finally some Canucks fans are starting to get it.

Because Lekkerimaki caliber prospects are not traded for rentals.

The last comparable prospect to Lekkerimaki that was traded was Suzuki, who was traded for Pacioretty with an extension.

Cap space lets you take advantage of teams that are jammed up. Giving up the best rental of the market for useless junk let's other GMs know you will cave and accept their trash offers.

I think back to 2017-2018. If we had Brayden Yager sitting in the CHL and Taylor Hall as a pending UFA was available I would have shipped the kid out without hesitation. If Vancouver doesn't want to offer a 1st or a recently picked 1st round prospect they can pound sand.

I don't agree at all. But Hogs and those other pieces you mentioned I'd probably have to do IF nothing else comes available. I'd try to shoot higher though.

Some have said the Predators might be a dark horse.
What else besides Kemmell and Tomasino would make you pull the trigger?

The Pens weaponized their cap space against teams jammed up cap-wise by trading for Reilly Smith.

I still don't think teams genuinely interested in Jake are trading for him as a rental. That's probably the root of the disagreement here. Teams don't trade for significant additions like Jake for 3 months of the dude imo. Hell, the Devils had Meier shit his pants down the stretch and in the playoffs and still gave him an asinine contract--which is looking like one of the worst in recent memory.

I think wherever Jake ends up, he'll probably stick long term unless Dubas can't find a place to send him other than Vegas or Edmonton, where he's a pure rental. But I don't believe that'll be the case.

100% AGREE. Jake will fetch a very good return. I disagree with some of the sentiment regarding asking price here. I think Kyle will get very good-great value.

I hope they are allowing interested teams to talk to Jake’s agent if that means a bigger return. Knowing the penguins though they’ll attempt to resign him with a full NMC to boot.

didn't know other teams could do this

I feel like they just signed him to an extension recently which makes Pittsburgh keeping Sully around more curiouser and curiouser.

Genuine question, as I'm too lazy to look it up; When's the last time someone of Jake's caliber was traded at a TDL and the guy was a pure rental? Like, a ~40g, PPG, top line forward.

I just don't see anybody trading for Jake only to let him walk.
