Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

Even if you disagree with jiggy, you have to understand that his view is how THIS management is approaching the situation.

I’d give malkin 4, because I don’t care about the money and I don’t care about the two years immediately following the retirement of this core.

It’s quite possible an NHL GM fails to share my progressive, 5head ideals
Hilarious.... you obviously also don’t care about the next 4 years either.

Cant wait to read this board starting as early as winter of 23.

Tampa traded McDonagh away and still don't have enough for Palat? Dude would be unreal here.
They probably have enough for his salary if he doesn’t want much of a raise…the real problem is they won’t be able to pay him 2+ years down the line…Cirelli and Sergachev are RFAs next season…they would also have to find a deal to trade Killorn, who won’t be resigned either most likely

It won’t matter for me, Kev, because I feel like some individuals deserve it. They’ve given everything to this club and brought 4 finals and 3 cups. Let them ride it out. It won’t sink the club.

yeah, I just hope we’re bad enough for a couple years some time soon to get top three draft picks in successive years lol

If we rebuild, rebuild right. Don't do what the Hawks are doing. In the NHL if you're going to be bad, be really bad. Those players you get in the top 5 are the core of what will win you Cups.

Three years from now maybe we can do a proper tank.

Hopefully, the Pens will suck so bad that you go follow another team. & leave this place alone . But as I posted yesterday You are like the old man angrily screaming at the sky for no reason

Are you advocating JR come back?
Nah if someone say night , he will say day & vice versa

Hawks aren't getting proper value for their assets. Now that's a GM that needs to be fired.

The lines designation don't really matter, 2nd line, third line fourth line who f***ing cares, you may want to pay a guy $3M who's gonna give you excellence in a role of $4C, and have a third wheel on the third line that is super complementary and you pay him $1M...The usage of line is blurred in the postseason, you play hot hands, find sudden chemistry, etc..., and giving Pens history of injuries, you can bring JC to 3rd or 2nd line for a dozen of games...
But his game fell off because he played too many minutes - or so I’m told that’s why.

Thats fine.....and be happy, management has obviously sided with the vocal part of the fan base that can’t move on.

You’re correct, it won’t sink the club. It will simply lock them in the worst place to be in professional sports, a malaise of mediocrity.

If Malkin gets Heinen and Rakell it'd qualify as competent support. Not good support, but competent and better than he's seen in years. We'd have to do better to be serious contenders.

Any time you feel the urge to rip Malkin for his production or lack of legs, just try to imagine he and Crosby switching linemates and consider the result. It may help to remember how Crosby has always looked when frustrated with a linemate, which ain't pretty.

Carter is not a great player. He's a player who provides a lot of what this team can use, with some flaws that they haven't adequately compensated for. But he's also a f*** of a lot better than Sheahan, Bjugstad, Brassard, and whatever other asshat this team has thrown at 3C since Bonino left.

I'll rip everyone involved in L2 sucking the last 2 years, thanks.

Zucker
Kapanen
Carter
ZAR
Heinen

That extends to one more player than you're willing to go to, because he's a sacred cow.

That said, I hope we bring him back for 3/$17-18 or 4/$20-22.

But for me this isn't a "the team can only let Malkin down, Malkin can't let the team down." It goes both ways. L1, Jarry and rando hot streaks from the likes of McCann, Boyle, Cody Ceci and ERod have allowed this team to comfortably make the playoffs with a second line that sucks. I'm not expecting it to continue.

Note for future use: When you attack the person and ignore responding to their opinion with your response, you are admitting defeat. The reason my logic upsets you is that somewhere in your deep recesses, you know it might be the truth. Sorry for bringing this board back to reality...some have to do it.

OK, Eeyore.

Change for the sake of change never works. You need a well-designed plan if you're going to move on from the core, and given the assets the Penguins have, there aren't many options available to them. Forsberg never made it to free agency. Gaudreau likely won't make it to free agency. Kadri and Trocheck have questions, will likely cost more than Malkin, and may not produce more than him.

So how would you actually advance the Penguins forward?

You're trapped in the vacuum of looking at only this offseason. First you sign no one for more than 4 years around the age of 30. You should have traded this year's crop of FA's probably 18 months ago when they held tremendous value. You trade a guy like Jake right now because he's back at peak value.

But this franchise and fan base doesn't want to make the tough choices. They don't want to go without next year. By not making the tough decisions now, you are going the route of the Red Wings. It's been 15 or so years since they last competed, and they're still not close.

That's what this fanbase is staring at right now; and your just starting year 5 of that process.

I think Seattle went all-in with the crappy analytics, CORSI stars etc.

But they have A LOT of space and could make Geno their Captain.

If they're still relying on crappy analytics, we know who their captain really should be:

Z-A-R.

Even if they don't make him captain, can they please at least sign him so that the Penguins don't?

Memo to Ron Francis: You know who else has really good analytics? Dom Simon.

The Penguins probably can't afford Palat unless they make some pretty dramatic cap moves.

My expectations right now are:

-Worst case scenario: they don't trade Pettersson or anyone else for capspace and they go into next year with Zucker-Malkin-Rakell as the 2nd line and Cheap UFA-Carter-Kapanen as the 3rd line
-Realistic best case scenario: they trade Pettersson and use his money to add 2 top-6 wingers for Malkin, which would have the 3rd line be Zucker-Carter-Cheap UFA
-Idealistic best case scenario: they trade Pettersson and Zucker and use his cap space to both add 2 top-6 wingers for Malkin and really beef up the 3rd line.

I've said it a few times, but my goal middle-6 for this off-season would be Rakell-Malkin-Trocheck and Heinen-Carter-Kapanen, but I think that would fall in the "idealistic best case scenario" group.

DOC and Zohorna have one ways. They will be with the team. Both are ready and one will be on line 3
