Off season time. New thread time apparently cause @Ugene Magic doesn’t like high page counts.

So how about them Malkin and Letang UFAs? Maybe we should sign one or both.

Geno thread. Keep Geno talk here:

I would bet my last dollar the same people pimping Klingberg are the same people that were clamoring for Zucker, Brassard and what’s his name.....

Wonder if it would be possible if the Pens lose Malkin, sign Letang and Klingberg? Of course we would need to feel the role of losing Malkin.. That would be awfully difficult with what the Pens are currently facing.
Why?

We have Matheson, would need to pay up for Klingberg and honestly Klingberg isnt even Dallas best Dman-you would be disappointed.

Let just keep signging similar style Dman and keep our backend soft

That image tells me the Penguins are on his mind (hat with a penguin closest to his brain) but his legs are still good enough for the Capitals/Red Wings/NYR (red shorts)

He is also with his son signifying that family is important and his next contract has to provide for them.

This is Freemason level stuff lol…I’m impressed

I'll side with Julian Brisebois on this one. If Paul hit the open market, I would have given him 5 years x $4M all day long.
And I think that’s pretty brutal. I’m not willing to give Brisebois any infallible charism when most of his work has been paying through the nose for good role players to surround Yzerman’s core.

Just emphasizes how team friendly of a deal Rust took IMO.

Honestly, it's kinda crazy he settled on what he did, especially how he was talking about wanting to get paid. I definitely think he could have gotten at least 6x6 in UFA

If he was single he probably would have left. The wife’s family lives close not sure if in actual Pittsburgh but close enough for a short drive. Wife and kids costing him 😂

Am I the only one to see a Portrait of Sullivan?!

"Ruhwedel turned down more money to play elsewhere"

Here are the dates that Ruhwedel has signed his extensions in the past:

-February 19th, 2022: 2 year extension when he was in the last few months of his current deal (not legally allowed to talk to other teams)
-August 28th, 2020: 1 year extension a year before his deal expired (not legally allowed to talk to other teams)
-May 23rd, 2019: 2 year extension before he hit free agency in 2019 (not legally allowed to talk to other teams)
-June 22nd 2017: 2 year extension before he hit free agency in 2017 (not legally allowed to talk to other teams)

Where did Ruhwedel even have the opportunity to "turn down more money" to sign with anyone else? He legally hasn't even been allowed to talk to other teams about an extension since 2016.
Lol what clown coach values him higher than Sully? That's a Sully contract right there. Ruhwedel has such a weird f***ing cult status with the Pens media and coach. He's a f***ing 7-8th defenseman getting opportunity over players with more potential and pedigree that deserve the ice time and have a better long term potential.

Nah gotta give it to the depth player because...reasons.

Ruhwedel as an everyday #6 is fine and will continue to be fine unless you believe the blueline urgently needs to be bigger. Which I kind of do.

I also fully believe he has eschewed the chance to seek more money and career opportunities elsewhere to stay here. That, of course, earns him nothing back.

I agree, but you only have so much money to spend in UFA, and upgrading on a guy who was very good in his role last year doesn't seem like the best use of money.

POJ-Ruhwedel is fine going into next year. If you need to upgrade on it, that's a trade deadline move, not an off-season move IMO.

New article from Pierre LeBrun…

-Initially, the Penguins offered Malkin and Letang two year extensions and both balked at that. They upped it to three years for both.

-Both prefer a four year deal assuming the AAV will be more team-friendly.

-Ultimately he believes Letang deal gets done, unsure on Malkin.

Initially offering a two year deal is so insulating if true.

Give em both 4 if they’re taking team friendly cap hits

Their “team friendly” and the Pens “team friendly” deal I imagine are too far apart.

3 years is fair for a 35 and soon to be 36 year old.

Ideally they take 3 on a slight discount but if you can bring the average down a decent amount by giving them a 4th that just makes sense.

It’d have to be a big discount because I’m sure they’re asking for NMC’s

I mean sure 3 is fair but if Malkin is at 8 and the team is a 6. I would give him the 4th year.

7.5-8 x 3
5.5-6 x 4

Same money overall but way better cap. who cares about year 4.

Not trying to be difficult but so what? The team is going to need dead salary in a few years, anyway.

What would the team realistically get for a like 40 year old Letang or Malkin? If they are keeping the core together it won't be to just trade them at the very bitter end IMO.

Ok, whatever. I'm going from the eye test of watching him play in OTT and then in TB in the playoffs. I liked him before he got traded (I thought OTT should re-sign him instead of trade) and he was excellent in the playoffs. Better than all but 3-4 forwards on our team.

He'll block a shot with his face or testicle and still go out there the next shift and hit someone, win a big faceoff, be great on the PK or score a goal. Does all the little stuff that you want and need to win in the playoffs. Plus, he has a serious playoff beard which is worth about $500K on its own.

I mean, Crosby will also likely sign for another number of years after this current deal ends when he's 37 going on 38. No issue with giving Malkin and Letang 4 years from me.

Yup, especially Letang. Dude is the modern day Chelios, and he'll play until he's 45 if he wants. Maybe by then, he'll finally get some recognition as being one of the best Dmen to play the game in the last 30 years and be widely considered for the HHOF as he should be.
