Smith played RW with Vegas up until this season. Cassidy switched Smith and Marchessault this season, and Marchessault ended up with the Conn Smythe on the Barbashev-Eichel-Marchessault line, and Smith wound up on the Smith-Karlsson-Amadio line.
I don't think LW is an issue here. I wonder if Smith is good enough in all facets of the game to convince Sullivan to FINALLY try Smith-Crosby-Rakell and then move Guentzel to Malkin's line. I have been wanting this to happen for years. Yes, Jake and Sid are great together. Jake and Geno, as briefly as we have seen it, has been awesome. That would give us better scoring depth, imo.
If we could start the lineup with something like:
Smith-Crosby-Rakell
Guentzel-Malkin-Barabanov
something-something-Rust
Then I think we are on the right path.
Smith does not make us younger, so Dubas has more work to do there. But he makes us better. I certainly like Smith more than Bunting or Zucker, that's for bloody sure. Also glad the third-rounder is for 2024 and not this year.
Let's keep 'er going.
