Its shockingly bad. I didnt even realize we were that f***ing atrocious we were with a lead last year against the Rangers.

This organization just loves "its guys". These clowns in the Pitt media need to start roasting this no-ideas, wilting, aphorism-spouting fraud we have as a coach.
How much does he make a year? 100k?

It's not like he's a million dollar JMFJ they are still paying for.
Fire his arse.

Honestly, the only way Sullivan gets canned is if the core give him bad reviews in their exit interviews. He's going nowhere if Sid/Geno don't think he's an issue.

So while I 100% agree that Sid doesn't like missing the playoffs, I'm not encouraged by his disappointment because I'm not sure it's aimed at the right source.
Sully is coming back 100%.

Hex did such a shit job that it's way too easy for Sully to just say "he never got me a goalie" and keep his job.

If they start like shit next season, the new GM might just fire him.

I'm still yet to see one 'long-pants' hockey player on the penguins.

Does anyone remember that!?

They've gotten soffer even more so than before hextal and the long-pants hockey revolution.
What a scam.
Never let a flyer into a pittsburgh organization, among much other foppery.

Would you guys rather be the Bluejackets, Hawks or Penguins ATM? LOL
I would like the Pens to be in the Hawks position, standings, roster and prospects-wise.
They're free of the Kane and Toews deals. Three of their bad AAV contracts expire next year.
They have 6 picks in the first 2 rounds this year. Their dead cap will disappear in 2 years.

Ownership presumably are still willing to spend to the cap, meaning they can become a great dumping ground to load up on picks and accelerate things further.
They are the closest to contender status imo. CBJ are making a mess of things.

The sole question is this.

Even if Hextall, or whoever, had, or in this case, has, a near perfect off-season and signed all the 'right' players for the bottom six, etc. can that team with a closer to 40 years old Sid, Geno and Letang be a Cup contender>?

If the answer is no then you should rebuild.

In a vacuum where only logic existed, you're absolutely right.
But sports aren't played in a video game and there is emotion and legacies and future FA's to consider if you went full nuclear like that.

Madden's rant doesn't mention Sullivan even once. Does he have blackmail material on the local journalists or something? This is becoming more embarrassing with every passing day.
Thought that was odd, too. But to be fair, he has absolutely lambasted Sullivan many times prior.

I guess it depends how Boston performs in the playoffs. If they continue their form from the regular season then no one else are contenders in actuality, since they can't stop them.
Teams would feel good about themselves for going deep or whatever, but they wouldn't slay the dragon at the end in that case.

To answer the question more directly though, I think there was definitely a way to get us a roster that could possibly reach the 3rd round, provided they didn't meet Boston in R1 or R2.
The margins are usually pretty thin in this league.

DK headlined his article with basically demanding Hextall's firing, but he did dedicate the latter half of his column to how poorly Sullivan has done this year.

I haven't seen any Pittsburgh media yet outright calling for his head though.

He's not wrong in the slightest
Worst loss? Debatable.
Most significant as in defining moment of their recent demise into mediocrity nobody was willing to admit even foreseeable to many at the start of the season? YES.

Pens must be a DISTANT second. Because there’s no way anyone who’s followed this team this season could’ve had any confidence about last night.

My mind thought we'd win out and that Detroit was the tough game, but my heart had a bad feeling we'd let our foot off the gas if we got through Detroit...

Just like us the last 4 years. Get ourselves in a hole, dig our way back out, roll over and die when it matters.

They will remain very good complimentary pieces.

Which is the point.

At this point the best thing that the Pens can do, both for the players and for the team who desperately needs a complete rebuild, is to trade them to teams that have players that they can compliment. Because there is zero chance that those players will be on this team.

Again, what direction do the Pens go?

Blow up the team and let Malkin, Crosby and Letang go for one more cup?

Or have a slow decline several year show where fans can cheer on their old heroes one more time on losing lousy teams. The Andrew McCutchen syndrome.
The problem now is next year Sid is 36, Malkin 37.

How much longer can they keep this up. If they decline at all this team will be brutal.

This is precisely why the organization continuing to focus on building a supporting cast of complimentary pieces rather than focus on adding some actual players who can drive play on their own continues to kill this team.

You put Sid and/or Geno on any other team in the playoffs where they can just be one of multiple offensive weapons and they're still incredible. The problem with the Penguins is they keep building rosters as though Sid/Geno are still 25 year olds in their peak and can carry rosters of 50 point complimentary pieces.

We saw it this year. Any time Sid or Geno looked bad, the team was lottery levels of bad. A team shouldn't be that dependent on 35/36 year olds, no matter how good they are or were in their prime. Detroit didn't win the Cup in 2002 with 36 year old Yzerman expected to be the sole source of offense for his club. He was one of many complimentary pieces on that club.
